Women Who Shaped Theater: Sarah Bernhardt to Audra McDonald

Theater has long been a space for storytelling, creativity, and performance. Yet, for much of history, women struggled to claim their rightful place on stage and behind the scenes. Despite these challenges, countless women have shaped the theatrical world, pushing boundaries and redefining the art form. In this post, we’ll explore the women who shaped theater: Sarah Bernhardt to Audra McDonald.

As a woman myself, I am always aware of women’s contribution to theater. In particular, I want to focus not only Sara and Audra, but also Lorraine Hansberry, Ethel Merman, Julie Taymor, Rita Moreno and Sarah Bareilles. Each of these trailblazers changed the industry in profound ways, leaving a lasting impact on performers, playwrights, and audiences alike. Women Who Shaped Theater: Sarah Bernhardt to Audra McDonald

My mother used to call me “Sarah Bernhardt” and at the rip age of twelve I didn’t know who she was.  I think in my mother’s own way, she was trying to tease me.  But now that I know about Ms. Bernhardt, I’m flattered! Before Broadway, before Hollywood, there was Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923). A French actress renowned for her dramatic flair and commanding stage presence, Bernhardt became one of the world’s first global celebrities.

  • She was known as “The Divine Sarah” and performed in roles traditionally played by men, including Hamlet.
  • Bernhardt toured internationally, bringing high art to audiences around the world.
  • She defied expectations by continuing to perform even after losing her leg in her later years.
  •  Bernhardt originally planned to become a nun but instead enrolled in the Paris Conservatory when she was 16. However with the support and encouragement of her mother’s wealthy lover, her prolific theatrical career was ignited

Bernhardt’s daring choices and larger-than-life persona set the stage for future actors to embrace their individuality and take risks in their careers.

Ethel Merman: The Queen of Broadway

If you think of Broadway belters, one name comes to mind first: Ethel Merman (1908–1984). Known for her powerful voice and impeccable comedic timing, Merman became one of the most influential musical theater performers of all time.

  • She originated some of Broadway’s most famous roles, including Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun and Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes.
  • Her strong, brassy voice set the standard for musical theater vocalists.
  • She worked with legendary composers like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin—many of whom wrote songs specifically for her.
  • She was a favorite of Cole Porter, who wrote Anything Goes and DuBarry Was a Lady specifically for her.

Merman proved that musical theater could be just as electrifying as a dramatic play, paving the way for powerhouse performers like Patti LuPone and Idina Menzel.

Lorraine Hansberry: A Playwright Who Changed History

While many women made their mark on stage, Lorraine Hansberry (1930–1965) changed theater history with her words. Her groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun (1959) was the first play written by a Black woman to be performed on Broadway. When teachers ask of a recommendation for someone to teach about during Black History month, I always suggest Lorraine Hansberry.

  • A Raisin in the Sun tackled themes of racial injustice, family struggles, and the pursuit of dreams, resonating with audiences of all backgrounds.
  • Hansberry was the first Black woman to win the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award.
  • She used her platform to advocate for civil rights, influencing both the arts and activism.
  • Her close friend Nina Simone wrote the song “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” in Hansberry’s honor after her passing.

Hansberry’s work opened doors for future generations of playwrights, including Lynn Nottage, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Dominique Morisseau, whose works continue to challenge and inspire audiences today. Pick up a FREE biography lesson about Cynthia Erivo!

Julie Taymor: A Visionary Director

Women have historically been underrepresented in directing and design, but Julie Taymor (b. 1952) shattered expectations with her revolutionary approach to theater.

  • She became the first woman to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical with The Lion King (1997).
  • She designed over 230 puppets for The Lion King, blending African and Asian theatrical traditions.
  • Taymor has directed not only on Broadway but also in opera and film, proving that theatrical storytelling transcends mediums.
  • In 1991, she received the MacArthur Fellowship, recognizing her innovative approach to theater.

In addition, her work paved the way for other female directors like Diane Paulus, Rachel Chavkin, and Liesl Tommy, showing that women can lead bold, visually stunning productions.

Audra McDonald: A Record-Breaking Star

No list of influential women in theater is complete without Audra McDonald (b. 1970). She is known for her astonishing vocal range and acting talent.  And get this:  McDonald has won more Tony Awards than any other performer—six and counting!

  • She is the only performer to win a Tony in all four acting categories (Best Actress and Featured Actress in both plays and musicals).
  • Her roles range from classic musicals (Carousel, Ragtime) to powerful dramas (Master Class, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill).
  • First Black Woman to Play Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music Live! (2013) and Bess in Porgy and Bess on Broadway.
  • She has used her platform to advocate for diversity and inclusion in theater, supporting young artists and underserved communities.

McDonald continues to redefine what it means to be a Broadway star, inspiring new generations of performers to pursue excellence on their own terms.

Rita Moreno: A Trailblazing Triple Threat

It’s important to mention that women from many backgrounds and cultures blazed the trail for females. Few performers can match the versatility and longevity of Rita Moreno (b. 1931). One of the few EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) winners, Moreno has influenced generations of actors in both film and theater.

  • She made history as Anita in the 1961 film version of West Side Story, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress—the first Latina to do so.
  • On stage, she starred in Broadway productions such as The Ritz (for which she won a Tony) and The Odd Couple.
  • She appeared in both the 1961 and 2021 versions of West Side Story—winning an Oscar for playing Anita in the original and portraying Valentina in the remake.
  • Moreno has long been an advocate for Latinx representation in entertainment, paving the way for performers like Lin-Manuel Miranda and Daphne Rubin-Vega.

At 90+ years old, Moreno continues to perform, proving that great artistry knows no age.

Sara Bareilles: A Modern Broadway Powerhouse

One of my personal favorite creators if Sarah Bareilles.  While many know Sara Bareilles (b. 1979) for her pop hits like Love Song and Brave, she has become a major force in modern musical theater.

  • She composed and wrote the lyrics for Waitress (2016), becoming one of the few female composers to write a full Broadway score.
  • She later stepped into the lead role of Jenna, proving her talent as a performer as well.
  • Her song “King of Anything” was a response to people constantly giving her unsolicited advice—especially about her music career.
  • Bareilles has continued her Broadway career with projects like Into the Woods and Girls5eva, inspiring more women to pursue composing and writing in theater.

Bareilles represents the future of musical theater, where women are not just stars but also creators shaping the stories we see on stage.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into the world of jukebox musicals, understanding what they are, their history, and their enduring charm and go exploring the magic of juke box musicals: when hits shape the stage. When I was nine years old, my parents drove all the way from Kansas to Alaska.  It was a fabulous trip and I loved every minute of it.  I have many memories of that trips.  In fact, I remember more of that vacation than many others.  I wonder why?

After driving nearly  4,000 miles to get to Alaska, my father didn’t want to drive the entire way back.  He planned for us to journey back to the states on a ferry.  We had made the trip with another family and their teenage daughters.  Although the girls were much older than I, they were kind and played with me.  Traveling on the ferry took more than a day, I believe. There wasn’t a lot for us to do and we became quickly bored having only the activity of strolling around the ferry.

Seeing My Future

The girls invited me along on their walks. I felt so special! We discovered the coffee shop contained a juke box.  I remember the juke box was shiny and the lights which were blue and blinked when a song played.   I’d never played a jukebox before and I was mesmerized by it.  Someone chose Paperback Rider by the Beatles.
Hearing the song, the teens appeared from everywhere jumping up and dancing to the music. My traveling buddies squealed and began dancing, too.  Thinking I was the same age as they, I joined them.  For the first time in my young life, I saw my future full of being a teenager and spontaneously enjoying life like I’ve never done before. I learned the lyrics to Paperback Rider dancing over and over again to the juke box that day.
To this day, whenever I see a juke box (and they are so rare to find anymore), I remember dancing to the ferry boat’s jukebox on the ocean between Alaska and Canada.

What are Jukebox Musicals?

Many theater and music students are unfamiliar with the term “jukebox” musicals.  Like other genres in music, it has its place in history.  In an effort to research them, I decided that a blog post focused upon them would be helpful to teachers, too. Of course, my little creative mind is thinking about a juke box musical product, too!

 Jukebox musicals are an exciting  genre of theater.  They capitalize on the power of weaving popular songs into the narrative.  In turn, it creates an exciting experience which resonates with both nostalgic fans and newcomers alike.

Are Jukebox Musicals Unique? 

At their core, jukebox musicals are a unique type of musical.  However, juke box musicals theatrical productions uses pre-existing popular songs and integrate them into their storylines. These songs are often hits from a particular artist, era, or musical genre. Unlike traditional musicals that feature original scores, jukebox musicals repurpose well-known tunes to enhance the storytelling.  People love juke box musicals! It brings together the familiarity of beloved songs with the excitement of live performance.  Plus, audiences enjoy this unique form of entertainment that blurs the lines between concert and theater. It’s a win-win!

Roots of Jukebox Musicals

The roots of jukebox musicals can be traced back to early musical revues and variety shows. Historically, snippets of popular songs were integrated into the performance. However, the genre truly gained prominence in the latter half of the 20th century. One of the earliest examples is “Ain’t Misbehavin'” (1978), which celebrated the music of Fats Waller. Yet, it was “Mamma Mia!” (1999), featuring the hits of ABBA, that catapulted jukebox musicals into mainstream success.

Important Elements of Jukebox Musicals

  1. Song Selection: As you would imagine, what is most important is the choice of song as they can make or break a successful production. The selected tracks must not only fit the narrative but also resonate with the audience’s emotions. These songs serve as emotional points of reference, thereby intensifying the impact of the storyline.
  2. Storyline Integration: Second most important element is the storyline.  It must seamlessly weave the songs into the plot.  We don’t want a scene to be dramatic only to have a humorous song complete it.  The two must jibe.  While some jukebox musicals opt for a biographical approach (e.g., “Jersey Boys” about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons), others create entirely fictional tales (e.g., “Rock of Ages” and most recently, One More Time–the music of Brittany Spears).
  3. Nostalgia and Familiarity: Audiences enjoy reminiscing, especially through music.  Jukebox musicals often thrive on nostalgia, evoking memories of a particular time or artist. This sense of familiarity draws audiences in and encourages them to relive fond moments.
  4. Creative Reinterpretation: Successful jukebox musicals reimagine songs to fit the context of the story. Sometimes, lyrics take on new meanings when performed in a different context, adding depth and nuance to the original tracks. This is one of my favorite assets of a juke box musical–to use a song in a different way which gives it new meaning.

The Enduring Allure

Jukebox musicals continue to enchant audiences for several reasons:

  1. Familiarity: The comfort of recognizing songs instantly establishes a connection between the audience and the production.
  2. Cross-Generational Appeal: These musicals often introduce classic hits to younger generations, while simultaneously evoking nostalgia for older ones.
  3. Energetic Performances: The fusion of live performance with beloved songs creates a vibrant and captivating atmosphere.
  4. Escape and Emotion: The synergy between music and storytelling allows for immersive emotional experiences that can be both uplifting and cathartic.

My Favorite Jukebox Musicals

I always confidently announce to friends, “There isn’t a musical I don’t like.” Yet, it’s true!  Even if it’s not my favorite, I always appreciate the time it took to craft it, build, rehearse and perform it.  Here are some of my favorites:

1.  Top of the list for me is Mama Mia!

The story: On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Beloved songs such as  I Have A Dream, Honey, Honey, Money, Money, Money, Thank You For The Music, Mamma Mia!, Chiquita, Dancing Queen, Lay All Your Love On Me, Super Trouper, The Name of The Game, Voulez-Vous, S.O.S., Knowing Me, Knowing You, Our Last Summer and  The Winner Takes It All. Wow!

2.  Jersey Boys The story: In the 1960s, four scrappy young men from New Jersey — Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young), Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen), Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) and Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza) — have the magic sound that propels them from singing under streetlights to singing in spotlights. With songs like Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry and Walk Like a Man,the quartet finds itself at the top of the charts. However, personal and professional problems threaten to tear the group apart.

3. Beautiful: The Carol King Musical-The story of Carole King is inspiring  and true.  Beautiful takes  you on an unforgettable journey of a remarkable career. A tapestry of creativity and innovation, Carole King paved the way for female artists for generations to come. Songs you’ll recognize are So Far Away, You’ve Got a Friend, Take Good Care of My Baby, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, I Feel the Earth Move and Locomotion among many others.

Never Underestimate the Influence of Teaching with Videos

When I began teaching, we didn’t have videos to show students anything pertaining to theater. Friends, never underestimate the never underestimate the influence of teaching with videos!

That was 1980 and the closest thing we had was an old projector which showed black and white films.  Yuck. Part of the reason this was uninspiring to students is as we know, theater is a visual art.  Plus, it gives students a concrete example of the quality of work professionals turn out. Consequently, not many students enrolled in drama classes.

I was looking around for more reasons why teaching with video works. I ran on to www.nextthoughtsstudios.com I found this quote helpful:   “Studies have shown that the use of short video clips allows for more efficient processing and memory recall. The visual and auditory nature of videos appeals to a wide audience and allows each user to process information in a way that’s natural to them. In a nutshell, videos are good teachers.”

Things are different now, huh?

Practically with the snap of a finger, a teacher can search for what she wants and show it in her classroom within a few minutes.

Creating products gives me oppportunities to see many videos worth viewing in the theater classroom.  I thought they might be of benefit to you, too!

Primarily, these videos are located on youtube.com.  If your school allows you to use Youtube. com, you will be good to go.  I’ve also mentioned several videos that you could rent or purchase for your classroom.

Hamilton!

Let’s Look at Hamilton, first!

There are many videos of Hamilton.  However one that I especially like is: Adam Savage Examines the Props of Hamilton.

Let’s begin with set design. Set Design for Hamilton is terrific.  It’s only 3 minutes in length. Fascinating stuff here.

The lighting design for Hamilton is awesome! Behind the Scenes with a Hamilton Stagehand Who Told Stories with LightsThis one shows what its like for a stagehand.  So interesting.  (5:58 mins.)

The costume design for Hamilton is a Hamilton Designers Explain How Costumes are Made I think you’ll learn something new here. (29:42 mins.)

Hamilton is available on line through DisneyPlus only.  Honestly, I’d sign up for DisneyPlus just to have the opportunity to show it to my students.

Wicked!

Behind the Emerald Curtain is a series of videos which were created for the express purpose of education.

Wicked Behind the Emerald Curtain is a fascinating interview with the costume designer, Susan Hilferty. There is more information here than just costume design, so take a look at this! (5:35 mins.)

In this video, the choreographer for Wicked explains the difference between choreography and staging a musical. See how the entire world of Wicked the musical was choreographed.  (4:47 mins.)

Who is an expert in stage smoke, fog and torches?  This man is. You’ll want to check out the special effects of Wicked for certain. Wicked: Special Effects (3:37 mins.)

Good news!  A movie version of Wicked is slated to begin productions in the summer of 2022.  Cynthia Erivo will pay Elfaba and Arianna Grande will be Glenda.  How wonderful will that be?

Now that the Dear Evan Hansen movie has been released, this would be a fantastic time to study the musical.

David Korins, Set Design of Dear Evan Hansen shares an incredible story about his creative process. (3:43 mins.)

Here is a short piece on the Genius Design of Lighting of Dear Evan Hansen you simply must show your students! In this video clip, the announcer explains the complexity and number of light cues used in one part of a song.  Amazing.  (3:13 mins.)

Maybe you need something physical for your students to do? You could use this as a warm-up of even lesson for the day.  Check out Dear Evan Hansen Dance Combo (27:01 mins.)

Oh my gosh, friends.  Spongebob Squarepants is such fun and your younger students will really enjoy learning about it.

You’ll want to look at the interview of a set designer. Set Designer David Zinn ( 7:00 mins.) I enjoy how he explains his concept of the musical, but also explains how color, the use of unusual objects and looking at the story as a child would.

Davis Zinn is exceptionally talented!  He designed the costumes for the production as well.  Explore the Costumes of Spongebob Squarepants.  (2:56 mins.) Your students will love what he uses for each costumes and the detail is immense.

Switching gears here.  I think showing a rehearsal of a production. It’s very important for our students.  It demonstrates that rehearsals should be done with high energy, full commitment and dedication.  Get a Sneak Peak at New Broadway Musical Spongebob Squarepants (2:25 mins.)

Hadestown

Take a Tour Downtown of Hadestown with Rachel Hauk, set design and Rachel Chavkin, director. (4:09 mins.) For your students who can’t get enough of the creative process of designing a production, you’ll want to show this one.

Making the Music Anais Mitchell  (3:50 mins.) talks about composing the music for Hadestown. In particular, she talks about the song, “Why Do We Build a Wall.: The lyrics to this song are not a political statement, but when Hadestown opened our former president was busy trying to keep immigrants out of the country.  Talk about life imitating art and vice versa.

Broadway’s Hadestown is a Google Talk (55:31 mins.) which older students would appreciate.  I think I would use it for a discussion and pick out certain parts which I wanted to point out–blocking, staging, etc.  Members of the cast have an opportunity to share about the production. I especially appreciate Andre Shields’ interview.  Although long, it’s worth the time.

You can find bootleg copies of Hadestown. That means someone recorded it illegally.  I don’t recommend using these because it just perpetuates the idea that this activity is acceptable.

Beetlejuice

Heres a fun one to study:  Beetlejuice!  The Cast of Beetlejuice Performed at  medley at the Tony Awards. (3:48 mins.) Something interesting about this musical is that it was nominated for many Tony awards and didn’t win one.  Strange, huh?

The set design is so imaginative–I’d show this for your gifted students.  They’ll get a kick out of it! David Korns strikes again as the designer of the Beetlejuice set.  It might be interesting to show the three video clips of his work and see if there are any similarities.  That’s what I would do.  Set Tour with Designer David Korin/ Beetlejuice the Musical. (7:22 mins.)

In How William Ivey Long Created the Beetlejuice and Tootsie Costumes (9:35 mins.) Long speaks about his process for the musical.  Talk about talented!  You’ll see that he spent over two years designing Beetlejuice.  Amazing.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Oh yes!  To study a  little bit of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play  would be fabulous for middle grade students.

If your students are unfamiliar with the play, show them this montage first: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Exclusive Montage. (4:43 mins.)

This clip shares many things–the director, special effects, blocking, staging, lighting design, costume design–you name it.  Behind the Scenes of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2:49 mins.) is a definite show on my list!

I think students will find this video Magic to Do: Harry Potter with James Snyder (9:51 mins.) demonstrates that actors are pretty much like the rest of us.  Pretty goofy.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Let’s say you want to read a play in your high school theater class?  I’d suggest To Kill a Mockingbird.  I’d include these video clips while we read it.  Maybe as a warm-up.

I’d begin with this video clip.  It concerns how the play was reworked by the director, Aaron Sorkin. How Aaron Sorkin Reworked To Kill a Mockingbird for Broadway  (7:19 mins.) It’s fascinating.

To Kill a Mockingbird Lessons for Today focuses on (7:10 mins.)  the show’s star Jeff Daniels and playwright Aaron Sorkin about translating Lee’s characters to the stage, and with students who talk about “Mockingbird”‘s relevance to today’s audience.

Lastly, this video clip discusses the characters of the play.  Citizens of To Kill a Mockingbird LaTanya Richards Jackson as Calpurnia (2:40 mins.)

I hope these video links give you a lot of choice and ideas for your classroom use.  If I were you, I’d teach a different musical or play each day–that’s 8 days or more of lessons for you.  And….a substitute could use these as well.

My theater vocabulary list for the classroom

Let’s talk about my theatre vocabulary list for the classroom.  I apologize. It never occurred to me that teachers needed a list of vocabulary for their theatre classes.

Theatre is such a major part of my life, I’d forgotten not everyone comes into teaching theatre classes as knowledgeable as I was. However, as I think about it, I remember what it’s like getting started teaching a theatre class.

It’s tough to get started.  Although there are colleagues who will advise you, sometimes you need someone sort of “at your finger tips” to help you.  That’s me!

Why teach vocabulary words?

This seems this would have an obvious answer.  But just as in every other subject students teach, theater students need to know the words and phrases you will use in your classroom.  We can’t expect out students to be good communicators if we don’t help them, yes?

There are many processes students can  use to learn these words.  If you pick up my Word Wall product, I’ve included several different ways to learn the vocabulary words.

Teach by osmosis!  What’s that, you say?  Learning by proxy, or being exposed to someone, can naturally achieve an unconscious assimilation of ideas, vocabulary, knowledge and even technical skills. It’s called osmosis.

A teacher could share a vocabulary word each day. Start the day with the word and even demonstrate it.  Honestly, you will be surprised how quickly the students will learn them using osmosis. Just by seeing, demonstrating themselves and writing them, they’ll learn many of these words as if by magic.

++++++++ I am sorry there aren’t more words and their definitions listed here. I think students were coming here and filling out their vocabulary and definition sheet list and not finding the words and their definitions on their own.

Tsk, tsk. So, I edited the list to give you a basic idea..

Actor to Choreography:

Actor    A male  person who performs a role in a play, work of theatre, or movie

Actress     A female person who performers in a role in a play, work of theatre, or movie.

Apron    The section of the stage floor which projects towards or into the auditorium. In proscenium theatres, it’s the part of the stage in front of the house tabs, or in front of the proscenium arch, above the orchestra pit

Cast       A set of actors in a play

Catharsis    A moment of high tragedy at the emotional climax of a play is followed by an emotional cleansing for the characters and the audience

Chanting     A word or phrase repeated for an effect

Character   A person in a novel, play, or movie

The Reasons It’s Important to Learn to Spell

  • It develops reading skills: Knowing how to spell correctly helps children become better readers. If they don’t know how to spell a word, they’re more likely to guess at its meaning, rather than understand its true meaning. Additionally, being able to accurately spell words helps to build fluency and allow kids to read faster.
  • It enhances writing skills: Knowing how to spell words correctly helps children become better writers as well. When they’re able to accurately spell words, they can express their thoughts and feelings more clearly, resulting in stronger writing overall.
  • It builds confidence: Being able to accurately spell words is a great confidence booster for primary school kids. Knowing that they can spell words correctly helps them become more confident readers and writers.
  • It improves vocabulary: Learning how to spell words correctly helps children learn the meanings of unfamiliar words and increase their vocabulary. This can be very beneficial for them in the future as they continue their education.
  • It helps with concentration: Spelling correctly requires focus and concentration, both of which are important skills for primary school children to learn. By mastering spelling, kids will be able to transfer these skills to other areas of their studies as well.
  • Ultimately, spelling is an essential skill for primary school children to learn. Not only does it help them become better readers and writers, but it also boosts their confidence, expands their vocabulary, and helps them develop concentration skills. Therefore, it’s important that primary school kids take the time to practice their spelling regularly.

First African American to Win National Spelling Bee

Have you heard of Zaila Avant-garde?  The multitalented teenage phenomenon Zaila Avant-garde, became an overnight sensation with her Scripps National Spelling Bee win at the age of fourteen, when she became the first African American contestant to win. Zaila Avant-garde, now sixteen, will add “author” to her already-impressive list of accolades that includes: 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, 2021 Sports Kid of the Year by Sports Illustrated Kids; and two-time Guinness World Record holder for feats related to her basketball prowess.

Her books, IT’S NOT BRAGGING IF IT’S TRUE: HOW TO BE AWESOME AT LIFE, a non-fiction middle-grade and a picture book, WORDS OF WONDER FROM Z TO A, a children’s picture book, will be published on June 27, 2023, by Doubleday Books for Young Readers and edited by VP, Editor-in-Chief Frances Gilbert.

Three Ways to Memorize Lines for a Play or Musical

Before you jump into all the fun stuff of participating in a production, we must address the elephant in the room–memorizing lines. For some people this can make or break their experience. Let’s talk about three ways to memorize lines for a play or musical.

Being part of a production can be a very rare life experience filled with exciting moments, making new friends and creating a project with other imaginative beings in the span of about six weeks.

“Really?” You say. “It will happen that quickly?”

Yup.

If you have ever tried to memorize lines, you know the anxiety that comes from trying to do so. I’m here to tell you that memorizing lines does not have to be stressful. In fact it can be fun and more like a game, so read on.

What is Memorizing by Rote?

Memorizing by rote is the act of practicing your lines many times in hopes that you will take them into your brain and the lines will be there when you need them.

Is memorizing lines difficult? It can be for some people.
⁣
It isn’t as difficult as you think.

Can a person be too old to memorize? Nope.

According to education.com: “Age can and often does negatively impact memory capacity, but aging doesn’t necessarily always affect memory. An older person who has an active lifestyle, including regular physical activity, mental activity, and social interaction, could have a short-term memory as sharp as someone several decades younger.”

So there! You can’t use your age as an excuse or reason you can’t memorize lines.

Method #1 Memorizing Lines

The first method is to walk the blocking and memorize lines as you do so.

“What?” you say, “It’s that easy?”⁣ Yup.

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:
⁣
Step 1–Find a place in your home with some furniture pieces to use as stand ins for the set. ⁣
⁣
Step 2–Designate each furniture piece as parts of the set (the table and chair is the kitchen, for example)⁣
⁣
Step 3–Go through your lines reading your script saying the lines aloud.⁣
⁣
Step 4–Your second time through, WALK the first scene in which you speak, slowly memorizing the lines using the blocking to help you. Remember: take this slowly and don’t force it!)⁣
⁣
P.S. A good director will give you blocking and/or help you to find the right blocking for your character. ⁣

Method #2 Memorizing Lines

This method isn’t the one which works best for me, but some people prefer it.

Record your lines with your cues.

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:

Step 1–Go through your script and record the line(s) of the person right before you

Step 2–Leave some room on your recording for the amount of time if you said your line immediately.

Step 3–Record your line(s) right after the cue.

Step 4–Begin at the top of the show and learn your lines one by one.  Listen to the  cue, then say the line, then check it!

People who have a commute like this method because they can listen as they drive.

Method #3 (Best Method In My Opinion)

My daughter was an avid performer when she was a young person.  Usually, she had no problem memorizing lines, but one year I agreed to allow her to perform in two shows at once.  (Yeah, I know, I know…)

Needless to say, her life became very stressful trying to keep the two shows straight.  However, she used one of her favorite ways to study for tests to learn her lines–FLASHCARDS!

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO.
⁣
Step 1–purchase a bunch of notecards from someplace like Officedepot.com and number them ⁣
⁣
Step 2–write on the back of the card, write out our lines in LONG HAND ⁣
⁣
Step 3–notate on the front of the card, write out your cue lines in LONG HAND which are just before yours.⁣

Note: The mere action of writing out the cards in long hand helps your brain to remember them. Don’t try to memorize them as you are writing them–relax and just write out the lines focusing on writing them.⁣
⁣
Step 4–put the card in numerical order and read through them. Read the cue line and your line preceding it.⁣
⁣
Step 5–now we begin memorizing the lines. This is a building block method so don’t hurry. ⁣
⁣
Work with  a few flashcards at a time, building on the card pile as you go. ⁣

My Experience with Line Memorization

I portrayed Penny in You Can’t Take It With You and she spoke constantly.  When it was time to memorize lines, I used the flashcard method to run my lines. However, it was a little tricky to rehearse as I drove down through the mountains from Estes Park to work.  Just a little dangerous.  (Oops!)

There are other methods to memorize lines, but these three are the ones I am most familiar with and suggest to my actors.

Please Don’t Do this

Several years ago,  I directed On Golden Pond an unconfident and novice actor thought he could leave his lines on notecards around the stage and occasionally refer to them.

He never figured that my stage manager checked the set each night prior to the curtain and took off anything which looked like trash.  Hmmmm.  Guess whose notecards weren’t on stage when he needed them?

Maybe he should have used the flash card method?

Everyone has their own way to memorize lines.  My advice?  Please don’t learn them numerically!  All you need to have happen is one person doesn’t say their line and your whole numbering sequence is off.  Yikes.

Has Covid Ended the Broadway Theater?

Recently, my husband and I caught a wonderful performance on BroadwayHD of “Slava’s Snow Show.”  It is quinessential circus theater and we nearly wept with joy while watching it..  Even though it was a filmed performance, it was the closest thing we’d gotten to live theater in nearly a year.

These are unprecendented times, yes?  Everyone in the world is in the same boat.

Will Broadway Theater Re-open?

It is hard to believe, but Broadway is coming back sooner than we think!

A time line has been drafted for the potential reopening of Broadway theaters and live entertainment venues.

As reported in Broadway News, New York state can reopen venues through a combination of quick Covid tests and socially distanced seating. Although audience numbers would be significantly lower than pre-lockdown levels, it’s the first step to Broadway being back open again.

Speaking about the framework, Governor Cuomo said: “The overall effort is headed towards reopening with testing. And we’re going to be smart, but also aggressive about it.” He also said that Broadway theatres could realistically open if everyone was proven to be Covid negative. As long as all safety protocols were signed off, “You can open a Broadway stage with a set percentage of occupants, where people have tested prior to walking into that Broadway theater.”

During the seven-month Pop Up Festival announced recently, small crowd sizes will be introduced for live performances. This will be the next step since the outdoor Bills Stadium reopened its doors, with up to 7,000 fans attending games.

Here’s the deal, though.  On February 23, venues with a seating capacity of over 10,000 will be allowed to reopen. Of course, this doesn’t include Broadway theater which are much smaller, but hey that’s a start!

Not everyone is excited about this plan. From the newyorktheatreguide.com, ” … Broadway leaders previously stated theatres can’t open until Coronavirus levels are low enough to sustain full houses in auditorium.”

Theater is expensive! My personal experiences with administrating theater companies taught me it is not cost effective without a full house. According to nytix.com, “Some may say that any attendance is better than no attendance, but operating costs for Broadway plays are often so steep that they need to sell at least 80% of tickets (or more!) just to break even.

Spending the producers’ money to put on Broadway shows for just 10-25% capacity, could very well create even more losses than having no shows at all. It seems like a real world skit of the famous Nathan Lane show The Producers, but with real consequences for art and people. Broadway Theatres could increase ticket prices but they would have to be 2-3 times the normal cost and they would soon run out of patrons with pockets that deep to buy them.”

At present, Broadway theaters are closed until May 30.

Which Shows Will Re-open?

If you think about it–we are talking about over 97,000 people returning to their jobs and/or be cast.  Unfortunately, they can’t just iron the costumes, turn on the lights and open the grand curtain.  It will take several months for a production to open again.

I looked around to see if I could discern which shows would re-open first. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. According to Broadwayworld.com  productions are slated to open sometime in the fall.

Productions included are:

  • The Music Man by December 20, 21l.
  • Caroline or Change
  • David Byrne’s America Utopia
  • MJ the Musical

Many productions (Dear Evan Hansen, Aladdin, Book of Mormon, Aint Too Proud, etc.) haven’t made an announcement yet.  I’ll update this list as news becomes available.

Who will open first?

Who will open first?  According to the newyorktheatreguide.com website, there are rumors that Hamilton will be the first Broadway show to re-open, with potential performances from Jul. 4, 2021. Yippee!

Speaking to Variety, Lin-Manuel Miranda said: “I think when theater comes back it’s going to be in conversation with technology in an entirely different way. I don’t think we go back to a world where a show premieres on Broadway, and then no one can see it unless they have two hundred bucks. I think producers are going to have to start thinking about how they’re going to capture [their work] because in capturing it they can actually capture a much larger audience for their live show.”

I’m intrigued by this comment.  Does Lin-Manuel mean covid precautions? Or recorded music?

Is Theater Dead? 

As a theater lover, director, producer, actress and teacher I worry about theater even without the pandemic.

It’s easily misunderstood and not everyone understands the power of the performing arts.  I didn’t know it at the time, but this post has come to pass: How Fulfilling is Life Without Theatre? 

I’m always reminded of this quote by John Steinbeck, “The theater is the only institution in the world which has been dying for four thousand years and has never succumbed.  It requires tough and devoted people to keep it alive.”

It does require grit from us in theater arts.  All around you right now there are people working to bring back theater for all of us. Feel comforted by that thought–theater people are a harty bunch!

In the meantime, while we wait to see live theater I can help a little. Here are some lessons which might be of interest to you.
