Will Wicked The Musical Ever Rule the World?

I have a confession to make. I’ve wondered, will Wicked the Musical ever rule the world? Maybe so.

The first time I saw the musical Wicked, I didn’t care for it too much.

Can you believe it?

Let me explain.  Wicked opened in October of  2003. The first time I learned of it was while watching the Macy Thanksgiving  Day parade.  They presented a preview of it. All I noticed were the costumes and hats.

It just looked weird, like it was trying too hard.   A musical about the backstory about Glenda and Elphaba? In opinion (and aren’t we glad I was wrong) there wasn’t much way this musical would be popular and stick around for a long time.

The next year, we took a school group on spring break to see the production. I really enjoyed it.

Our youngest daughter, age 15 returned home from the trip starstruck. She wore out the CD as she listened and sang to it for probably a year.

A year went by and the show, became very popular and well, the rest is history!

What makes Wicked so popular?

Where do I begin to answer this question.

I create drama education lessons and Wicked was one of the first Broadway musicals which I examined. Although I greatly enjoyed the musical, I never thought about the elements which would be terrific to teach in the classroom. Oh. my. gosh

Four Reasons for Wicked the Broadway Musical’s Excellence 

1.Costumes--First, the show won a Tony award for Best Costume Design and it is easy to see why. Here’s a quote from the designer, Susan Hilferty concerning her concept: “The whole idea of the clothes of the citizens of Oz—I imagined that in 1911, basically when the book was written, as if a chunk of earth had been lifted off and sent out into the universe.The whole idea of the clothes of the citizens of Oz are their own distortion and changing of the Edwardian Era. When I was looking at all the clothes, I was looking at various clothes from the Edwardian time, and then twisting them on  their center. 2.  Set–Set Designer Eugene Lee won the Tony for Best Set Design.  Concerning the set, “We opted to create an environment inspired by the inner workings of a clock.  The shapes, textures, colors, and functional aspects of clock  gears and mechanisms contributed to a permanent environmental structure, which defines the stage space.”  What of  the materials he used? We were interested in natural, realistic materials, not the newest industrial-strength polymers.

The wood we chose has  proven to be the perfect material and continues to improve with age and distress.  The show the deck, which is constructed  of natural maple, is equipped with seven automated tracks, all lined with steel for visual  interest.  To stay consistent with our concept of clock mechanisms, many of the automated deck units are designed to reveal the mechanics that operated them.” Amazing, huh?

Behind the Notes: The Musical Genius of Steven Schwartz

3.  Music--The very accomplished composer, Steven Schwartz wrote the music for Wicked.  The easiest song to write?               “Popular.”  The most complicated? His fifth try of the angry roommate song, “What is this feeling?”   The first song he wrote was (which is apparently not his usual way of beginning), “No One Mourns the Wicked.”  The music was   nominated for  a Tony award this time for Best Music.  I’m seeing a pattern here, are you? You can’t compare  Schwartz’s  music to  anyone else.  It is fabulous and something your students would enjoy studying.

4.  Book--The origin of the script of Wicked is an interesting one.  I won’t divulge it here, but suffice to say the writing of  the script changed this author’s life…for good.  Though the Tony award for Best Book of a Musical did not go to  Wicked, it was nominated.  That’s a tremendous accomplishment!

Drama Desk Awards for Wicked

Wicked won several awards from Drama Desk as well.  Maybe that’s why Wicked could take over the world. They include:  Outstanding Musical, Lyrics, Book of a Musical, Director, Orchestration, Set Design and Costume Design.  Drama Desks are the only awards that consider Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off-Broadway shows in the same competitive categories.

What about its message?  At first glance, you may think it’s a revved up “Wizard of Oz”, but no. You need to look deeper than the flying monkeys and magic spells. This enchanting musical is really about friendship, identity, and standing up for one’s beliefs, even when it seems like the rest of the world doesn’t agree with them.

I see Wicked has just surpassed Cats to become the fourth longest running musical on Broadway.  Read here. 

Differentiation at its best

As I mentioned, I have a lesson about Wicked.  In fact, I have several–one is a PDF, one is digital, one is for the Google classroom and one teaches through  Boom cards.

This two-day lesson focuses on the Tony award winning musical Wicked. When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire‘s acclaimed 1995 novel, ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, re-imagines the Land of Oz, creating a parallel universe to the familiar story written by L. Frank Baum and first published as ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ in 1900. storm. Students have an opportunity to study the musical’s journey to Broadway, composers, plot, trivia, etc.

Additionally, the lesson can stand alone or be combined with one of my Famous Artist Biographies (Lin Manuel Miranda or Sarah Bareilles for example) or other musical lessons (Hamilton or The Wiz)

How do I use this in my classroom?

Is that possible?  Drama students can be shy? I know it’s tough to believe, because we are a noisy bunch. So let’s talk about drama games for the introvertive student.

For various reasons, the answer is a resounding “yes!”

Recently, I read a post from a teacher lamenting about this on a Drama Teachers Group Facebook.  Her shy students wouldn’t budge from their seats no matter what she tried–and these were fifth and sixth graders.

Why Drama Games Help Students Feel Safe Enough to Participate

After teaching for thirty-eight some years, as you might imagine, I taught all types of students from the most enthusiastic class to the smallest and most shy. Honestly, I can figure out a class dynamic fairly fast, because of my experiences.

Do you need help?

Like adults, students are primarily afraid of the unknown.  Aren’t we all?  Additionally, I’ve had adults who desperately want to participate in a play but scare themselves off before they even sign up for an audition.  Students might have older siblings telling them embarrassing stories about their experiences in a drama class.

Everyone Makes Mistakes

Or they’ve seen bloopers on Youtube.com and put themselves in place of the performers and suddenly “everyone” sees the mistakes.  Little do they know the performers actually shared their bloopers for the express purpose of getting likes. You never know what your students think a drama class looks like.

My advice is to dispel any myths about drama class which they might have accepted as truth. Myths of drama class are:  we always act, lines must always be memorized, classmates will laugh and ridicule our performance, we will be asked to do something embarrassing, etc.  Generally, students worry about their image at all times whether they are in a drama class or in the hallway.  The last thing the teacher wants to do is feed that anxiety.

The best way to de-mystify their worries is by starting very slowly.  Use drama games and exercises in which everyone can have success. Or if that seems too much for them, start with technical theater lessons first.

Drama Games for Shy Students

Here are a few of my go-to drama games for the introvertive or reluctant student:

  1.  “Alliteration Name” Game--A lot of teachers use this game, however in drama class, we are a bit more expressive.  I expect students to come up with word which describes you realistically or unrealistically.  They must add a gesture of some kind and they can choose the rate of delivery for the line (fast or slow), add an accent and certainly choose some emotion to convey through the line.  I demonstrate first that gives the students an example of what their interpretation should look like.  If a student is stumped when their turn comes up, I direct them and even demonstrate an idea.  Usually, that’s all the reluctant needs.  Once they have a little success with the exercise, they see where they can fit into the class.
  2.  “Copy Me”–I like this game because it’s a simple premise: the student copies the tone, inflection and body position of the person before them.  Then they do their own version of the same line.  Suddenly, the worry about performing is minimized.  How hard is it to imitate someone?  We do it all the time whether we realize it or not.  We pick up vocal inflections, a person’s delivery and even their gestures.  Think you don’t?  Have you ever mocked someone or demonstrated to someone how something was said to you?  Yup.

More Games and Exercises for Shy Students

  1.   “This is not a hanger”-–This exercise relies on a person’s imagination, however the challenge is very focused.  We just come up with something which is the same shape as a hanger.  It could be large (pyramid) or small (earring), used (an iron) or enjoyed (a martini.) You do need a hanger for the students to see.  Go around the class and when they are ready to participate, instruct them to say, “This is not a hanger, it’s a _____________.” There is only one rule– once that thing is suggested, no one can suggest it a second time.

2. “Lean and Leave”—This exercise strengthens the imagination and uses the body for demonstration.  Person A pretends to lean on something such as a wall and must be able to hold the position indefinitely. Person B goes to Person A and leans against Person A in some particular way. (For instance,  if Person A is pretending to lean on a wall with one hand, Person B might rest their elbow on the back of Person A.  Person A asks Person B, “Are you ready?” because Person B must be able to lean indefinitely without Person A there.  Person A steps away.  Person C goes to Person B and leans against them in another unusual way (for instance, they lean with their back against Person B).  Person B asks the same question of Person C and so forth.

 Everyone can participate in this exercise. It’s very engaging and different. I always challenge students to lean on different planes—high, medium or low, or putting their feet up on the other person and so on. I’m known to instruct the new leaning person to turn his head or bend an arm to show the difference in the look—just like those sculpture people.

Using Drama Games to Break Through Student Hesitation

3.”Tableau”—Though not a drama game per se, any student can have success with tableau.  Furthermore, it takes very little investment on the part of the student.  Students work in a group (that’s a real plus), they choose a story to demonstrate (for instance they show the beginning of the story, its middle and end) and there are no spoken lines. Ultimately, they merely freeze in place as part of the tableau. If the students are feeling comfortable, take this exercises a little farther by tapping each student and allowing them to say something as the character.  Again, keep it nice and friendly.

Building Connections Through Play: Mind Meld & Drama Circles

  1. “Mind Meld”—The goal is for two people to say things together until they reach the same word. It begins by one person saying “one,” the second person saying “two,” and then both people counting to three together. They then say anything at all – a person, place, idea, concept, phrase: anything.

Then we think what the common thing between those two things or associated with those two things would be. We repeat the one, two, three and try to use the two previously stated things to arrive at a third, common one. We keep trying each time until we say the same word. When we finally arrive at the same word we sing and dance to “It was a mind meld, it was a mind meld, it happens all the time, it was a mind meld. ” Sometimes it is played with the same pair of people all the way through until they connect on a word. Sometimes the group can opt in and out and it is played between the team.

2. Drama Circles—Drama circles are a wonderful way to involve your more shy or reluctant students.     Please your students in a circle (usually we sit on the floor).  Pass out a card to each student.  Each card tells them a           part  of a story.  Their job is to tell it to the rest of the circle.  You can even give one card for a small group who                   dramatize the story with movement, sound or tableaux.  Pick up this resource for an example: Drama Circle 

3. Group Based Improvisation Exercises–Once your students appear comfortable with your class, you might try   these improvisation exercises which are still a type of drama game.  If it were me and this was the beginning of the         year, I would try one the second week of classes.  Grab it here.

Today I want to talk with you about three lessons to engage your drama class using differentiation.

I wasn’t a very good math student when I was a child.  I made it okay to third grade but then Mrs. Gibson had to take off the rest of the school year.  Mrs. Butterfield tried to teach me, but I got behind during division and then fell through the cracks. Of course, we only learned from textbooks–no cute clipart, certainly nothing thematic and blah, blah blah.

Our daughters were great math students.  That was some thirty years later and students were using manipulatives and calculators.  Wow, what a difference! Observing them utilizing various methods of learning to arrive at an answer, I know I could have done it, too.  My math skills would be much better than at present.

What does “differentiation” mean to you?

“Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.”

I can’t imagine a drama teacher not using differentiation, can you? It’s just what we do~ 

When I was researching this topic, I found some great information and suggestions.  One in particular from the Ontario Ministry of Education shared a tremendous example.  You really should check this out: edugain.ca

The best point made was that differentiation can offer many choices for students in their learning.  Throughout this terrific lesson the students were instructed to change their groupings, involve other classmates, shuffle themselves while continuing to learn.

Oh, I do that naturally!  I don’t know about you, but I like changing the group chemistry.  Have you ever worked on a problem with student learning groups and they solve it one way and another group solves it a different way?

Number One:  Creative Movement

After reading this cool lesson from the Ontario Ministry of Education, I was reminded of a movement warm-up exercise from Viola Spolin’s book, Theater Games in the Classroom.

The warm up is called Freeze and Melt.  It’s not an easy warm-up (best with middle grades and older.)   Usually students need to be fairly comfortable with each other and/or willing participants.

Basically, they create a statue.

Here is my version–I encourage them to put themselves in unusual positions–twists, bent over, one arm stretched out, etc. One requirement is absolutely a must– They must be physically connected to their partner.  Usually, I suggest they connect foot to foot because it’s the least threatening contact.

As always, the lights are turned low in the classroom which helps them feel less vulnerable and exposed.  Classical music is played in the background to encourage a calm and relaxed feeling.

Once the students create their “statue”, I give them instructions about the different places the imaginary sun would be warmest on their body.  Their job is to melt very slowly focused on that part of their body where the sun is warming them.  I give each melting movement about five to ten seconds. I coach them as they move, so they don’t rush by counting them down. At this point, I ask them to freeze again. Observing them, I point out interesting shapes which occurred for them. We try a different place for the sun to warm them.  They melt and freeze when I direct them.

Now they understand the warm up.

We end the exercise.  They shake out.  I give them a second to chat with their friend and take a new position.

We begin again and go through the same steps.  I encourage them to remember their face can express a particular emotion.  This deepens the experience for them as they realize the value of facial expression.  However, this time, the exercise lasts at least a minute (which sounds like a short time, but is actually quite long when you consider what I’ve asked of them to do.)

Now for differentiation--the group brings in two more people.  I give them very little time to make this new group, because I don’t want them to think too much.

The third time I push them to freeze in unusual positions.  At the very end of the exercise, I charged the students slowly “ooze” to the floor. We do this very slowly–on a ten count.   I encourage them to take unusual, ugly positions.  This is absolutely fascinating to watch!

If the class is very comfortable with the exercise, I’ve been known to have all of them create a statue together.  I like to push my students because I know if they trust me and they are relaxed and having fun, anything is possible. Number Two: Set Design

It is very infrequent for me that I do not give students choices.  I mean, don’t you like it when you get to select the size of drink you’d like instead of someone just slapping down a huge soda when you thought it would be of a reasonable size? Me too.

My set design unit gives allows for differentiation.  First, they can study it in parts.  For instance, the set design rendering lesson gives them a chance to take their ideas and draw them.

Set Design Lesson

After they study set design, they have many choices. For instance, high school students are required to read a play of their choice.  Middle grade students might read aloud a play they are studying, but they’ll design a set for it which they choose.  In one set design unit, students design sets of their school.  Again, choice!

When it comes time to build a scale model of their set, they find a partner. Additionally, this gives them an opportunity to make a decision as to who they would work best with and could work cooperatively with for several days.  I like this requirement because it teaches them to consider their own learning styles while carefully considering their classmates’. Number Three: Improvisation

No matter the class or grade level, I give students who are new to a drama class an opportunity to learn at their own pace. However, this does not mean we can wait until next year to try improvisation.

If a class is extremely reluctant, I’ll seek out the least worried student and demonstrate with them.  If the students are ELL and language is a barrier for us, I will stay with theater games until I see them relax and begin enjoying the experiences.  Again, this gives students another method of differentiation.

Sometimes I will group students by the color of their shirt, shoes or season in which they were born.  They never know how I will group them, because it depends upon their willingness to “play” along with me. Other times, they group themselves.

In most situations students write, read, listen, speak and demonstrate their learning to me.   You might say I’m thorough, but I’m not pedantic–I ignore the small stuff and concentrate on the big picture.  There is time enough to be perfectionistic down the road. Six Great Lessons Students Can Learn from Ground Breaking Musicals

Lin-Manuel Miranda is quoted as saying, “The musicals that leave us kind of staggering on our feet are the ones that really reach for a lot.”

I agree with him.  Recently, I happened upon a YouTube video of performers in a Smash Mob from Les Mis’.  The video was from 2017.  The singing made me cry it was so beautiful.

Certain musicals do leave me staggering, how about you?  I consider them to be ground breaking.

What are some ground breaking musicals?

That’s a tough question.  There are many, almost too numerous to list here.

Number One: Rent

My curiosity for information regarding those exceptional musicals was piqued.  Which musicals carved their own way in musical theater?  Looking around, I found this information.

“You might call this one, the “anti-Cats” musical. Drawing on his memories of his first apartment in New York — with rotting floorboards, no heat and a shower in the kitchen — and the friends he’d made then, writer Jonathan Larson created the musical “Rent.” Based on the Puccini opera “La Bohéme,” “Rent” tells the story of a group of struggling artists, and while it’s meant to capture the passion and love often associated with the Bohemian lifestyle, it also illustrates the dire aspects of being a “starving artist,” so to speak.

The re-imagining of the famed opera takes it from tuberculosis-riddled Paris to the East Village in New York City, at a time when AIDS was causing much distress. It depicts love and passion in spite of progressive, incurable illness. The musical, which dispensed with many Broadway staples, like dimming the lights and starting with an overture, went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for drama. It was only the seventh musical ever to earn the distinction.”

The lesson to be learned from Rent?  Live in the moment and to live every day like it is your last.

Other Ground Breaking Musicals

Lesson Two:  Oklahoma!

From the 1920s into the 1940s, popular tunes inevitably came from Broadway musicals. Composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Irving Berlin were in the height of their careers. Oklahoma! was ground breaking in several ways. Rather than a huge ensemble number it opens with cowboy Curly singing, Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’! There’s a healthy dose of insanity and murder. Songs aren’t just musical window dressing anymore; they drive the story forward.

The lesson to be learned from Oklahoma!: Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule; Be tolerant of differences; Use good manners, not bad language; Be considerate of the feelings of others; Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone; Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements. One teacher who reviewed the unit said, “Extremely satisfied. This resource is very complete and provided lots of teaching options to use with my students. Versatile and appealing!”

Lesson Three:  West Side Story

Another innovative musical is West Side Story.  Wow, you can’t beat it, can you?  The carefully cut costumes of the Jets and the Sharks still look fresh from the dryer. There is no profanity (unless you count, “Krup you!”) and only one gun. But in the 1950s, a gang version of Romeo and Juliet packed with racial tension and a bittersweet conclusion was a big deal. Reviewer Walter Kerr of the New York Herald Tribune summed up the reaction after opening night when he wrote, “The radioactive fallout from West Side Story must still be descending on Broadway this morning.” The musical scored by Leonard Bernstein was also doubted initially as too operatic.

The lesson to be learned from West Side Story:  There are consequences of racial/ethnic/cultural hatred and what occurs when one’s pride controls a person’s behavior and attitude. You can find my unit here: West Side Story Broadway Musical Unit.

Lesson Four:  Jesus Christ Superstar

Let’s not forget Jesus Christ Superstar!  Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and librettist Tim Rice, both British, debuted with the first rock opera, all of the dialogue set to music. That style of libretto has since evolved into the norm for musicals. I remember hearing the musical for the first time at a youth group meeting–amazing experience.  If you haven’t seen the live television version of it, check out my blog post concerning the talent who portrayed Judas, Brandon Victor Dixon and  The Two Most Inspiring People I’ve Seen This Year

The lesson to be learned from Jesus Christ Superstar: There are consequences to success and the power that comes from it.  

Lesson Five:  Chorus Line

“Five, six, seven, eight!”  Those are familiar directions to a cast.  Chorus Line looks inside the lives of seventeen dancers competing for eight spots in a Broadway production. Before its fifteen-year run ended, the Michael Bennett musical further loosened the definition of how musicals had to be structured. With A Chorus Line, monologues and songs could serve as their own plot, if they stayed consistent with a central idea. This philosophy gave future musicals permission to try other, less traditional innovative forms.

The lesson to be learned from Chorus Line: Dreaming is important, but action is even more important.  

Lesson Six:  Hamilton

Here are several quotes from websites about Hamilton which I think say it better than I can,  “The show combines hip-hop, rap, R&B, soul, and traditional show tunes to create its novel score. And Miranda’s witty, sophisticated lyrics bring the familiar historical characters to life in a whole new way, drawing the audience in with their humanity and familiarity. The resounding success of Hamilton is undeniable.”

The blog, Broadwayinbound, mentions, “America’s founding fathers were all white, and many of them owned black slaves; in Hamilton, however, people of color play the leading roles — and Miranda says that was very intentional. “This is a story about America then, told by America now, and we want to eliminate any distance.”

Here’s another from https://www.cbc.ca, “From childhood Miranda loved musicals, and performed in several high school productions. One of his all-time favorites is Les Misérables, and that musical theatre classic inspired Miranda’s thinking on Hamilton. The things that you can see in Hamilton that are affecting people are also present in Les Mis. One, it’s trying to capture so much of the human experience that even if we fall short, we’ve got a lot of it. I mean, Les Misérables starts in prison. It’s ‘Look down, look down, you’re standing in your grave.’ And then it goes up from there,” he said in an interview.”

I especially like this quote from The Guardian, :Hamilton features black and brown actors, but its story never depicts a slave. That said, it’s also true that minstrelsy is crucial to Miranda’s project: he takes the long American minstrelsy tradition of white people in blackface on stage and reverses it.”

Isn’t it easy to understand why it is so popular?

Nine Drama Lessons for Black History Month Which Increase Student Engagement

Most of us are aware that February is Black History Month.  I’m so glad we give people of color a spotlight.  They certainly deserve it. Today I’m going to discuss Nine Drama Lessons for Black History Month Which Increase Student Engagement.

What is Black History Month?

Good question.

Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Black History Month began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. Celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom it is observed in October.

When did February become Black History month?

According to www.history.com, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Videos to View for Black History Month

Another activity a drama class would appreciate is to view a play or movie with a black cast.  If students are in high school, I first suggest Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom with Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman.  Just excellent!

Drama Lessons Celebrating Black History Month

If you want something unique, I have famous theater artist biographies available.  First, these are great for a substitute provided you have access to the internet and youtube.com.  Primarily, I developed these short lessons as a way for students to learn about successful theater artists journey to Broadway–a growth mindset sort of lesson.

Here is an example of a product’s description:

This distance learning lesson focuses on actor Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning James Earl Jones. The student researches questions about his life, journey to Broadway, and various accolades he’s received while practicing growth mindset. Finally, using a One Pager assignment, the student designs his life.

Happy Holidays (okay, it’s a little early, but covid….)

Pretty soon, all of the holidays special will begin and luckily, this year is no exception.

On December 9, there is going to be a live version on NBC of the Broadway musical, “The Grinch”!

#1  THE PLOT

If you don’t know the musical, (because you’ve been living in a cave or something) the story goes like this:

The action of the musical happens in mysterious Whoville. Christmas is a wonderful holiday, which is adored by all the residents of the fantastic town. Who doesn’t love this time of the year, when everything around is covered with fluffy snow, when we feel a smell of a fir-tree, and people exchange with magnificent gifts? Therefore, on the eve of the holiday, the inhabitants are concerned about purchases of the gifts, decoration of the houses and, of course, preparation of dishes for the holiday table.

Once upon a time, a man lived in a town. His was called Grinch. His body was green and hairy. That’s why nobody in the Whoville loved him. The main hero took offense on the inhabitants and decided to live on the lonely mountain, which was blown by winds. A dog was an only being, who kept his company. On this mountain, he sat in a cave and was angry at the whole world.

Grinch hated Christmas most of all. While the population of a town had fun with all hearts, the indicator of already bad Grinch’s mood expressed something awful. Each Christmas appeared to be a terrible torture for the green hermit. One day, a spiteful inhabitant of the mountain decided to finish a holiday once and for all. While the carefree Whovilleans were sleeping in holiday night with pleasure, perfidious Grinch decided to steal Christmas from the citizens, to make nobody able to have fun anymore.

Now, as well as the residents of the town, Grinch is in cares: he needs to prepare an ideal crime, that nobody could follow his ways. Two teenagers and two girls got on the mountain, where Grinch lived, and it finally angered him. He left the cave, put on a fancy dress and went down to the city, where he began to frighten everyone, who occurred on his path. What to do, if the circumstance, which is hard to cope with, unexpectedly interferes into the plans of Grinch? To speak more precisely, it is the little girl, who even wants to make friends with the character.

The girl, who helped the father with mail, was frightened so much that she fell in the packing machine, but then, probably, Grinch felt sorry and pulled her out. Cindy thanked him. Being raged by the fact that someone can think that he is kind, Grinch wrapped her with the tinsel. Then the girl thought that, maybe, Grinch is not so bad as everyone speaks about him. She also absolutely cannot understand the sense of Christmas and wants to reconcile him with the residents. However, finally, Grinch realizes that sense of Christmas is not in gifts. The repentant villain decided to return the gifts to the inhabitants, and they accepted him to their society.

#2 MATTHEW MORRISON

Matthew James Morrison will portray Grinch! Morrison is an American actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter. Morrison is known for starring in multiple Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, including his portrayal of Link Larkin in Hairspray  on Broadway, and for his role as Will Schuester on the television show Glee. He received a Tony Award nomination for his featured role as Fabrizio Nacarelli in the musical The Light in the Piazza.

#3 DENIS O’HARE

Denis O’Hare will play his dog, Max.  O’Hare is an American actor, singer, and author noted for his award-winning performances in the plays and musicals such as Sweet Charity,  as well as portraying vampire king Russell Eddington on HBO’s fantasy series True Blood. He has been nominated for an Primetime Emmy for Best Actor.

#4 THE COSTUMES

Personally, I think the costumes from the film version were exceptional.  I don’t know if they can reach that level of detail, but I’m interested in seeing if they do so.

#5 THE CHOREOGRAPHY

From viewing the snippet on NBC, I can tell the choreography is fun and playful.  That’s got to be a plus, huh? Here’s a trailer for the show:

As you may know, several musicals have been performed live in recent years.  In my opinion, some were better than others.  I enjoyed NBC’s Hairspray and Jesus Christmas Super Star the most.  I would hope these production companies are learning how to produce a better product each time they attempt one.  Who knows?
