Ten Steps in a Play Rehearsal in Youth Theater is one of those subjects you figure anyone who has acted at least once will know. Not so. This is a two part post.  Next time, I’ll give you the rest of it, ok?

Lately, I’ve read several posts from newbie teachers with no idea about the steps of the rehearsal process for a play or musical.  That seems odd to me, but maybe they are teachers whose focus is Language Arts, Social Studies? I know that sometimes the administration will ask to direct the school play or supervise the drama club, so that could be the reason for the unfamiliarity.

Regardless, I will take you through the process for both a play and musical.  You can depend upon this process to prepare your young actors because I’m an expert in directing youth theater.  Having directed over 350 plays and musicals with both adults and children, I know the process like the back of my hand.

I’m assuming you have the funds to mount your production.  If not here are a few ideas for you:  Turn Your Theater Department Fundraising Into A High Performing Machine

Step One: Selecting the Script

Before you, the director, do anything you of course must read several scripts and decide upon the one you like the most. I suggest you check out: Dramatic Publishing Company or  Dramatists Play Service. but there are many more just as good.  Keep in mind the number of characters, scenes, props and costumes.  All that will matter when you begin to mount the production.  I could write a whole post just about how to select a play or musical, but instead check out: Critical Steps in Selecting a Play or Musical: Casting

After you’ve chosen the play, you may want to announce it to your students.  When?  It depends upon when you plan to announce it and when the production is to be performed.  Me?  I announce a month ahead of the auditions and no sooner.  I don’t like for students to focus on the show too much ahead of time.  Before you know it, they’ve precast the whole show, purchased their own copy of it and maybe memorized lines.  Oh, no, no, no!

Step Two:  Auditions

Auditions will take a few days:

Day 1 and 2 Auditions

Day 3  Call backs

Day 4  Cast Announced

You may think this is a short time, but that’s what we are going for here.  Do your best not to drag out the audition process–the outcome becomes too important to the students.

Advice:  If you have an auditions and allow students to watch one another audition, then you may consider announcing to them something along the lines of, “From now on until the show is cast your behavior and attitude matter to me.  No distractions are tolerated by me. I expect you to be quiet and attentive. No phones may be out.  If someone happens to record another student’s audition and posts it publicly, the guilty party will be denied a role in the play.  This is an unbending rule.”

Casting Tips

I also remind them that, “Although at the present moment it may feel like this is the only play in the world in which you could be cast, this isn’t true.  This isn’t the be all, end all.  Check around the city and see if anyone else is producing a show you could audition for and participate elsewhere.”

Post the cast list either on a Friday afternoon  (when you can leave the school or theater for the weekend and give students time to unruffle their disappointed feathers) or post on-line on your website. Handling emails from parents on Monday is another blog post….someday.

Step Three:  Cast and Crew Read-Through

I’m old school, so I still call this meeting the “read-through.”  Some people now call it a table read (I always thought that was only used for television or movies), but no matter. At this read-through, I ask the cast and crew to introduce themselves and the role or position they are filling.

Next, it’s time to share my concept for the production.  I might have a collage of photos, textures, colors or I might just talk about my thoughts.  Personally, I think a collage is the best because then everyone knows what you consider the color blood red, for example.

We read through the show.  If I have a stage manager, they read aloud the stage directions.  This is to give the cast a feel for the play not that we are going to use these directions.  Not everyone knows that the stage directions that are printed in the script are honoring the first cast to have ever performed the play.  It is not required that you use the directions.

The stage manager hands out a rehearsal schedule. I make it clear to the cast and the crew that their attendance matters.  They all ready know the absence policy because I gave it to them at the auditions.

Step Four:  Blocking Rehearsals

In the coming days, we begin blocking the play.  If I am able to do so, I tape the stage giving the cast an idea of the size of the set, where stairs and doors are located, etc.  Usually, I use folding chairs in place of the furniture.  Everyone is aware that the chairs signify particular pieces of furniture.

Depending upon the length of the play, I usually block about 5 to 8 pages at the first rehearsal.  Why not many?  Because the cast is adapting to the script, plus the stage and my direction. Some young students need to write down their blocking before they even step on the stage.  That’s your call.

Advice:  You will not find that novice actors having a sense of blocking and staging.  They can not block themselves nor frankly should they.  You are teaching them about acting in a play–that’s part of the responsibility of someone directing youth theater.

The Blocking Process

I use a building block process when directing. Usually, I have two hour rehearsals with one ten minute break at half.

Day 1 block pages 1 to 8

Day 2 block pages 9 to 15 (or when there is a change in the mood or rhythm of the play) If a character enters the stage for the first time, they will change the dynamics of the play–I promise you. The playwright writes the scene this way on purpose.  So, block to the entrance of the character. (When a character enters or exits the stage it is called a French scene.)

Day 3 block pages 16 to 20, review blocking 1 to 8.  Less new pages to block, more time to spend on reviewing the first day’s blocking.

Day 4 block pages 21 to 26, review blocking 9 to 15 and so forth

Day 5 block pages 27 to 30, review Day 3 and Day 4 blocking.

Blocking Rehearsal

This part of rehearsal would continue until the play is completely blocked–a few new pages, several pages of review, until I am finished.

If you have a difficult scene (such as the dinner scene in The Miracle Worker between Helen and Annie), I take an entire rehearsal to block it.

Do I expect everyone to attend each rehearsal?  No, I’d rather they did not.  It’s just more students for me to be responsible for, more chances for talking and whatever else might bug me that day.  🙂

Step Five:  Working and Developing Rehearsals and Off Book

Let’s say I have everything blocked by Day 10.  Next we go into working and developing rehearsals.  Working rehearsal are just that–we work through the play a few pages at the time (probably using two days of blocking at a time) and fix any problem areas or give the students more opportunities to practice together. Developing is just a fancy name for giving the play “air” as I call it.  I give the cast a chance to settle into the play, adding their ideas here and there.

Advice:  I expect students to practice on their own time–reviewing their blocking and memorizing their lines.  I do not use rehearsals for line memorization. Those days can be excruciating for all of us as we listen to someone struggling with their lines.  Frankly, it makes everyone listening anxious. Students should be off book for act one by Day 10 and act two by Day 15. Here is a blog post with three proven methods for memorizing lines: Three Ways to Memorize Lines for a Play or Musical I’m strict about this. What is off book?  It is the day when the actors rehearse without a script in their hands. They can call for lines, but if it’s obvious they have not memorized their lines, I make them practice with their script as to not bring the mood of the rehearsal down.

I thought it was time to talk of the seven facts about teachers’ wishlists that’ll keep you up at night. Two weeks ago, I experienced something I wasn’t aware was a big problem, but it is my friend.

As a former teacher myself, I remember the materials I purchased which I asked my admin to pay for.  Sometimes these materials may have seemed extravagant (such as the Cirque De Soleil book on Costumes) or merely for fun (such as the video of the live version of Come From Away) but they were not.

Theater teachers have an unusual skill set–we must be familiar with directing, acting, sing, dancing, music, set, costumes, props, lights, sound, box office, front of house and much more.  Because of this, we need different materials than some.

As I mentioned previously, I had an eye opening moment when I found out a business I am involved in was willing to fulfill some teacher’s wishlists for their classroom.  Hooray! Knowing this, I jumped on Facebook and posted that I had this resource for teachers needing materials for their classroom.  Within an hour, thirteen teachers had contacted me!  Thirteen!!! Plus, there were several more that I had to turn away–that killed me.

Luckily, I was able to fulfill these wishlists for these teachers or at least get them partially fulfilled.  It was very gratifying and of course they were all very appreciative as I expected they would be.

Our teachers are using their own hard earned money to purchase materials for their classrooms.

Now, I knew some of this occurred with most teachers because teachers are always on the search for materials which will engage their students and make it easier for them to learn.

Here are the facts

  1. The average teacher is spending about $560 out of pocket on their classrooms this year; up from $511 last year. CJOnline.com
  2. Just under half of teachers told us that supply lists provided to parents include items specifically for classrooms, but only one-quarter of teachers get most of what they need. Of course, parents are also dealing with higher school supply costs, and many of them may have been negatively impacted by the expiration of expanded child tax credits, which expired in December 2021. Savings.com
  3. Nearly one in four teachers say they’ll spend more than $750 of their own money during the 2022-23 school year.
  4. On average, elementary school teachers receive about $11 per student from their schools’ budgets, but they spend an additional $33 out of pocket on each student. And get this: one in four teachers said their schools didn’t allocate any funds for classroom items this year.
  5. In Kansas (for example where I live), public school teacher salaries increased by 16.6% but that’s misleading.
  6. In general teachers are bringing home on average $2,179 less per year than they did a decade ago, when adjusted for inflation. NEA.org
  7. Despite the fact that most people agree teachers are underpaid, they are still expected to dig into their own household budgets to provide items necessary for classroom instruction. And these costs are going up, slightly higher than the overall rate of inflation. ( I don’t know about you, but I bet business executives aren’t expected to bring their own tissues to their office.)

Why is this occurring?

According to an article in https://www.businessinsider.com:

“Teachers will often purchase supplemental materials to help students struggling to grasp the curriculum. These additional resources are not always subsidized by schools. Although they follow a curriculum, and create their own lesson plans,  for some students, this is not enough for them to truly grasp the material.

Supplemental materials don’t just include supplemental lessons. Sometimes tactile activities are needed to help kids learn lessons, or, in the case of kindergarten and preschool classrooms, learn motor skills.”

1. Classful

Classful is a website designed to allow teachers to collect funding and donations for their classrooms (as well as a little extra for being fantastic educators!). The site places emphasis on the importance of the teaching profession and aims to empower and thank teachers for doing what is often under-appreciated work.

2. Apple

K-12 educators (and those in higher education) can get as much as $150 in Apple gift cards for purchasing certain models of iPads, MacBooks, and iMacs.

3. Target

Kindergarten through grade 12 and homeschool teachers can get a 15 percent discount on school supplies at Target through Sept. 10.

4. Michaels

Educators with a valid school ID can get 15 percent off their purchase at Michaels.

5. Association of American Educators classroom grant

Apply by October 8 for a $500 grant which can be used to purchase books, software, calculators, math manipulatives, art supplies, audio-visual equipment, lab materials, and more.

6. AdoptAClassroom.org Spotlight Fund grants

This organization offers grants in several categories for educators. STEM teachers, art teachers, and teachers of color can apply for unique grants, as well as teachers who need support to make their classrooms more inclusive for students of all types.

7. Funds for Teachers

Funds for Teachers aims to invest in teachers’ professional development and growth with a view to boosting student success rates, improving teacher practice, and generally strengthening schools and their communities.

Funds for Teachers allows users to write grant applications according to a template tailored for a specific state’s professional development requirements, as well as requirements for supplies or new technologies. Teachers can even take a look at successful grant proposals for inspiration.

8. National Endowment of the Humanities

If you work within a humanities discipline, the National Endowment of the Humanities could provide opportunities for you to travel in order to broaden your horizons and learn new things. Trips can be taken domestically or abroad and all expenses will be paid (including accommodation, air travel, daily meals, and excursions). Making the most of this opportunity could help to develop your teaching practice by opening you up to new ideas and cultures.

9. The National Endowment for the Arts

Are you an art teacher with some ideas for a new project to involve your students in? The National Endowment for the Arts could be a great place to seek funding. The organization offers a selection of fellowships and grants for people that teach arts-related subjects such as English, art, or creative writing.

10. GetEdFunding

GetEdFunding is an invaluable site that helps educators and schools identify the kinds of funding they need when finances get tight through a special grant-finding search tool. The site hosts thousands of grants for educational purposes including awards for outstanding educators, grants for teachers in need, opportunities for an array of public and private schools, grants for administrators, and special educational programs.

Teachers can also develop themselves professionally by browsing the site’s scholarly articles and selection of free webinars and videos. There is are also online communities that teachers can visit for support and a virtual teacher’s lounge to enjoy during a few minutes of precious downtime.

11. The National Education Association Foundation

Not to be confused with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Education Association (NEA) Foundation is a public charity that was founded by teachers and for teachers to boost the caliber of public education for students across the country.

The organization offers grants to teachers,including teachers wishlists regardless of whether they are members of the NEA or not. Over the past decade or so, they have awarded over $7 million in funding to almost 4,500 public school teachers in order to enhance the quality of their teaching. The NEA also provides free scholarly resources and professional development advice online.

12. Teach.com

Teach.com is an online database offering teachers an array of helpful resources covering topics such as professional development and improving student attainment. It also offers a helpful guide to ways that teachers wishlists can source funding to improve their teaching practice and help students.

13. The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation offers grants to small groups of teachers to attend intensive professional development courses that will allow them to bolster student achievement in their schools.

14.  Donors Choose

Donors Choose is a site founded by Charles Best, a history teacher who channeled much of his salary into funding classroom supplies. He set the website up in the year 2000 with the aim of helping teachers to collect donations to fund their classrooms. In 2003, Oprah Winfrey plugged the site on her television show, and it attained instant popularity, with around $250,000 going straight to educators.

The site itself is very easy to use. Teachers can post projects that they feel their schools need such as field trips, extra classroom supplies, or new software. Users can then donate as much as they are able to the project. Donors Choose will then order the necessary supplies and ship them directly to the school.

In case you aren’t aware, I am an idea person.  Hence, I want to take this a step further for theater teachers but similar to Charles Best.

Part of my DramaMommaSpeaks business mission is to make theater user-friendly in the classroom while maintaining the integrity of the subject.  To my mind, this idea would be an extension of that mission.

I’m thinking about establishing a not-for-profit organization whose sole purpose is to provide funds for United States’ theater teachers wishlists in the classroom. (And if you don’t know me, if I think it and say it,  I usually do it!)

In the past, I’ve submitted and been granted not-for-profit status for a youth theater company in Columbia, Missouri called Performing Arts in Children’s Education. During that time, I allocated funds for students seeking scholarships to participate in our company. In addition, I also have seven years of experience writing program grants for a community theater, Columbia Entertainment Company.

My idea is to set up a website for teachers’ wishlists much like Donor’s Choose but only theater teachers may ask for donations for their classroom. I would publicize this website in social media and here on the blog.  Initially, I would foot the bill of creating the website. Of course, I’d have to find out any legal policies in administrating something like this, but that doesn’t deter me since I have past experience with both sides of the donor process-both as an administrator of a company and as a representative for a company seeking funds.

Like Donors Choose, a theater teacher could submit to this website an itemized teachers wishlist of their needs, a short description of the reasons for requiring help, their location, their school’s population, etc. This teacher could be teaching at any grade level and those who also teach musical theater classes could apply as well.

A Baker’s Dozen of Teaching Ideas for the Frazzled Drama Teacher

Here are a baker’s dozen of teaching ideas for the frazzled drama teacher which I hope will help you. I know you.  I’ve been there, too. There is nothing worse than feeling overwhelmed and exhausted with no brain space to plan or organize yet another lesson for your students.

There are one or two weeks in the school year which nearly put a drama teacher over the edge–technical week of a production. Or particular months such as  October or December?  Those are challenging times, too.

It’s a large number, yes?  Every part of a production has details, understandably.  But the details have details! And on top of that, the teacher must attempt to teacher her classes and deal with student behavior. In other words, you have two jobs–one the classroom and one directing a production

Frazzled Teacher Days Suggestions

For those days when you are frazzled, here are my suggestions of subjects your students can learn about*:

  1.  Play analysis–read, analyze, present, create an stage property.
  2.  Broadway musicals–study and compare them
  3.  Stage properties— learn about and create one for your show (that’s an awesome idea!)
  4.  Radio Theater–work in small groups and create their own radio theater performance (pick up FREE this live sound effects checklist) 
  5.   Costume design–read the production you are rehearsing and design for the production
  6.   Set design–-study design and create a model for your production
  7.   Famous theater artists–learn about and portray him or her through a short monologue about their life such as James Earl Jones
  8.   Devise a theater piece— focus on the themes in the play or musical you are producing but take a different slant structuring an improvisation
  9.   Technical theater–view video clips about various Broadway productions. I have a blog post about this at Never Underestimate the Influence of Teaching with Videos
  10.  Choice Boards–students study what they are interested in giving them more feeling of ownership.  You can use mine at: Bundle of Choice Boards
  11.   Playwriting–animate a short story (with dialogue) or scene from a play.  Check out this software program at Celaction. (They have educational licenses available.)
  12.   Sound Design–develop a sound scene focused on a particular holiday or important day in history

Pre-Planning Your School Year

A word of advice:  the minute you select your dates for your production I suggest you count back ten days and begin to plan those days of your instruction to your classes.  That way, you have carved out a reasonable amount of days to keep the students occupied and engaged without you losing your mind. There is a lot of research about the distracted mind and why it’s a problem.  I searched about on the internet to find something which applies to this particular case.  Here is what I found in an article on www.inc.com:

“Psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert found that the human mind is actually wired for this state of continuous distraction. In a study conducted with 2,250 adults, they concluded that we spend around 47 percent of every waking hour “mind wandering.” Also called “stimulus-independent thought,” mind wandering is an experience that so ordinary, so natural to us, we don’t even notice it.”

Here is something else, according to an article in www.theGuardian.com, 

“The impact of interruptions on individual productivity can also be catastrophic. In 2002, it was reported that, on average, we experience an interruption every eight minutes or about seven or eight per hour. In an eight-hour day, that is about 60 interruptions. The average interruption takes about five minutes, so that is about five hours out of eight. And if it takes around 15 minutes to resume the interrupted activity at a good level of concentration, this means that we are never concentrating very well.”

When you are working on a production, how many distractions take your attention from the show?

I’ve discovered something important about myself. If I have important details on my mind, anything I can do to eliminate less important things from my brain or checklist allows me to better concentrate. By planning ahead, I can help my mind to focus easier and with less struggle.

It’s Tiger Time

One activity you can do for yourself is use “Tiger Time”.

Tiger Time is a habit used in working:  turn off all distractions, close your door, put a sign on the door that you are unavailable until a particular time and take on one thing on your list.  Yesterday, I used Tiger Time to create a new product for my store.

The Pomodoro Technique

Another time management method of working is the Pomodoro Technique.  I like the Pomodoro Technique because it’s simple. You work on a task for a fixed amount of time (a pomodoro, e.g.: 25 minutes) without any distractions and take a short break after (such as 5 minutes.) Then, after a certain amount of pomodoros (e.g.: 4), you take a longer break.

I think it’s more fun and kind of like a reward!

Here’s a great time from Todoist.com–-Keep an “Overlearning” project in Todoist with a list of tasks you can quickly choose from the next time you find yourself with pomodoro time to spare.

Generally, I’m more the Pomodora method type of girl.  Although I’m guilty of making my breaks shorter, because I’m usually inspired and just don’t want to stop.  How about you? 

Be Careful Not to Over Plan

Be careful that you don’t over plan your day. I like to take care of the most pressing responsibilities I have and then work from there.  For instance, today I needed to compose an email for my email list folks and this blog post. These go out on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.  This is Monday.

By the end of the week, I need to have a new radio theater play script written.  If I get these two bi-weekly responsibilities out of the way today, the rest of the week is more relaxed. Luckily, I don’t procrastinate tough jobs.  I put them on paper and give myself time to “percolate on them”. While I’m composing the email message and scheduled and writing this blog post subconscious brain is considering the story I’m going to adapt and how I want to adapt it.

Plus, give yourself some grace if you didn’t make the deadline you’d made for a project.  It’s okay.  You are human.  You just do the best you can at the time–that’s all anyone should ask of themselves.

Never Underestimate the Influence of Teaching with Videos

When I began teaching, we didn’t have videos to show students anything pertaining to theater. Friends, never underestimate the never underestimate the influence of teaching with videos!

That was 1980 and the closest thing we had was an old projector which showed black and white films.  Yuck. Part of the reason this was uninspiring to students is as we know, theater is a visual art.  Plus, it gives students a concrete example of the quality of work professionals turn out. Consequently, not many students enrolled in drama classes.

I was looking around for more reasons why teaching with video works. I ran on to www.nextthoughtsstudios.com I found this quote helpful:   “Studies have shown that the use of short video clips allows for more efficient processing and memory recall. The visual and auditory nature of videos appeals to a wide audience and allows each user to process information in a way that’s natural to them. In a nutshell, videos are good teachers.”

Things are different now, huh?

Practically with the snap of a finger, a teacher can search for what she wants and show it in her classroom within a few minutes.

Creating products gives me oppportunities to see many videos worth viewing in the theater classroom.  I thought they might be of benefit to you, too!

Primarily, these videos are located on youtube.com.  If your school allows you to use Youtube. com, you will be good to go.  I’ve also mentioned several videos that you could rent or purchase for your classroom.

Hamilton!

Let’s Look at Hamilton, first!

There are many videos of Hamilton.  However one that I especially like is: Adam Savage Examines the Props of Hamilton.

Let’s begin with set design. Set Design for Hamilton is terrific.  It’s only 3 minutes in length. Fascinating stuff here.

The lighting design for Hamilton is awesome! Behind the Scenes with a Hamilton Stagehand Who Told Stories with LightsThis one shows what its like for a stagehand.  So interesting.  (5:58 mins.)

The costume design for Hamilton is a Hamilton Designers Explain How Costumes are Made I think you’ll learn something new here. (29:42 mins.)

Hamilton is available on line through DisneyPlus only.  Honestly, I’d sign up for DisneyPlus just to have the opportunity to show it to my students.

Wicked!

Behind the Emerald Curtain is a series of videos which were created for the express purpose of education.

Wicked Behind the Emerald Curtain is a fascinating interview with the costume designer, Susan Hilferty. There is more information here than just costume design, so take a look at this! (5:35 mins.)

In this video, the choreographer for Wicked explains the difference between choreography and staging a musical. See how the entire world of Wicked the musical was choreographed.  (4:47 mins.)

Who is an expert in stage smoke, fog and torches?  This man is. You’ll want to check out the special effects of Wicked for certain. Wicked: Special Effects (3:37 mins.)

Good news!  A movie version of Wicked is slated to begin productions in the summer of 2022.  Cynthia Erivo will pay Elfaba and Arianna Grande will be Glenda.  How wonderful will that be?

Now that the Dear Evan Hansen movie has been released, this would be a fantastic time to study the musical.

David Korins, Set Design of Dear Evan Hansen shares an incredible story about his creative process. (3:43 mins.)

Here is a short piece on the Genius Design of Lighting of Dear Evan Hansen you simply must show your students! In this video clip, the announcer explains the complexity and number of light cues used in one part of a song.  Amazing.  (3:13 mins.)

Maybe you need something physical for your students to do? You could use this as a warm-up of even lesson for the day.  Check out Dear Evan Hansen Dance Combo (27:01 mins.)

Spongebob Squarepants

Oh my gosh, friends.  Spongebob Squarepants is such fun and your younger students will really enjoy learning about it.

You’ll want to look at the interview of a set designer. Set Designer David Zinn ( 7:00 mins.) I enjoy how he explains his concept of the musical, but also explains how color, the use of unusual objects and looking at the story as a child would.

Davis Zinn is exceptionally talented!  He designed the costumes for the production as well.  Explore the Costumes of Spongebob Squarepants.  (2:56 mins.) Your students will love what he uses for each costumes and the detail is immense.

Switching gears here.  I think showing a rehearsal of a production. It’s very important for our students.  It demonstrates that rehearsals should be done with high energy, full commitment and dedication.  Get a Sneak Peak at New Broadway Musical Spongebob Squarepants (2:25 mins.)

Hadestown

Take a Tour Downtown of Hadestown with Rachel Hauk, set design and Rachel Chavkin, director. (4:09 mins.) For your students who can’t get enough of the creative process of designing a production, you’ll want to show this one.

Making the Music Anais Mitchell  (3:50 mins.) talks about composing the music for Hadestown. In particular, she talks about the song, “Why Do We Build a Wall.: The lyrics to this song are not a political statement, but when Hadestown opened our former president was busy trying to keep immigrants out of the country.  Talk about life imitating art and vice versa.

Broadway’s Hadestown is a Google Talk (55:31 mins.) which older students would appreciate.  I think I would use it for a discussion and pick out certain parts which I wanted to point out–blocking, staging, etc.  Members of the cast have an opportunity to share about the production. I especially appreciate Andre Shields’ interview.  Although long, it’s worth the time.

You can find bootleg copies of Hadestown. That means someone recorded it illegally.  I don’t recommend using these because it just perpetuates the idea that this activity is acceptable.

Beetlejuice

Heres a fun one to study:  Beetlejuice!  The Cast of Beetlejuice Performed at  medley at the Tony Awards. (3:48 mins.) Something interesting about this musical is that it was nominated for many Tony awards and didn’t win one.  Strange, huh?

The set design is so imaginative–I’d show this for your gifted students.  They’ll get a kick out of it! David Korns strikes again as the designer of the Beetlejuice set.  It might be interesting to show the three video clips of his work and see if there are any similarities.  That’s what I would do.  Set Tour with Designer David Korin/ Beetlejuice the Musical. (7:22 mins.)

In How William Ivey Long Created the Beetlejuice and Tootsie Costumes (9:35 mins.) Long speaks about his process for the musical.  Talk about talented!  You’ll see that he spent over two years designing Beetlejuice.  Amazing.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Oh yes!  To study a  little bit of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play  would be fabulous for middle grade students.

If your students are unfamiliar with the play, show them this montage first: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Exclusive Montage. (4:43 mins.)

This clip shares many things–the director, special effects, blocking, staging, lighting design, costume design–you name it.  Behind the Scenes of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2:49 mins.) is a definite show on my list!

I think students will find this video Magic to Do: Harry Potter with James Snyder (9:51 mins.) demonstrates that actors are pretty much like the rest of us.  Pretty goofy.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Let’s say you want to read a play in your high school theater class?  I’d suggest To Kill a Mockingbird.  I’d include these video clips while we read it.  Maybe as a warm-up.

I’d begin with this video clip.  It concerns how the play was reworked by the director, Aaron Sorkin. How Aaron Sorkin Reworked To Kill a Mockingbird for Broadway  (7:19 mins.) It’s fascinating.

To Kill a Mockingbird Lessons for Today focuses on (7:10 mins.)  the show’s star Jeff Daniels and playwright Aaron Sorkin about translating Lee’s characters to the stage, and with students who talk about “Mockingbird”‘s relevance to today’s audience.

Lastly, this video clip discusses the characters of the play.  Citizens of To Kill a Mockingbird LaTanya Richards Jackson as Calpurnia (2:40 mins.)

I hope these video links give you a lot of choice and ideas for your classroom use.  If I were you, I’d teach a different musical or play each day–that’s 8 days or more of lessons for you.  And….a substitute could use these as well.

Before we begin, let me tell you a little story.

About eight years ago, I taught in a wonderful home school enrichment program (with around 800 students,grades k to 12) which was part of the St. Vrain School system in Longmont, CO. In my first year, I directed three musicals (I used the MTI juniors) and taught six classes (at three different locations.)

As is typical of me, I am sort of a create-a-monster kind of person; I have a tendency to keep improving something until I’m satisfied with it.

In my sixth year of teaching for Apex, I was directing FOUR different musicals (all MTI juniors) as well as FOUR children’s musicals (MTI kids) as well as teaching twenty-four classes. Yes, you read that correctly.  Each location offered a bit of a different curriculum so of course that meant different preps. for me. (One school wanted a film class.  Another an intro. to Shakespeare, etc.)

My health began to deteriorate.  I was frustrated, sarcastic, short fused, tired all the time and very stressed.

Consequently, in my seventh year I dropped two schools and just taught Thursday and Friday. But my inspiration was  waning. At this point, I’d directed around 350 plays and musicals over the thirty-eight years I’d taught (both schools and an excellent community theater).

Finally, I taught one more year and retired at age sixty. I was totally ready.

You see, I care more about what the students gain from my teaching than my own sanity and obvious health. I was willing to exhaust myself if more students came away with feeling being a part of a group, increased self-esteem and confidence.  That’s really all I cared about.

No one told me to take care of myself.  If they did, I was too stubborn and proud to do so very much.

I nearly ruined my health learning the lesson to do so, however.

Three Major Teacher Burnout Symptoms

According to the website prodigygame.com, there are three major teacher burnout symptoms:

  • Cynicism — a sense of detachment from work or life, loss of enjoyments, pessimism and isolation.
  • Feelings of ineffectiveness — Apathy, hopelessness, increased irritability, lack of productivity and poor performance.
  • Physical and emotional exhaustion — Always tired, unable to sleep, forgetfulness or trouble concentrating, anxiety, depression and anger.

Here’s another thing no one thinks about–there are after school activities like plays or musical rehearsals, marching band, ball practices, , study help, cheerleading, the chess club.  All of these extracurriculars are fun to do, but they do take a toll on a teacher’s energy.

Don’t get me started talking about the hours a theatre teacher puts into directing a play or worse yet, a musical! It’s staggering.  As the teacher/director, you not only direct the show but you also design the costumes, set, lights, sound, create stage props,  handle the tickets, advertising and let’s not forget your teaching load! What’s the Answer to Burnout?

I wish I could say there is one way to handle the burn out.  But there just isn’t.  Here are a few things I learned over time:

  1.  I didn’t grade every paper which sat on m desk.  Some can be given a participation grade (I used a check, check plut and check minus) especially when the students are just learning a concept.
  2.  Planning my calendar to give myself breaks within the week was essential.  For instance, if my Creative Dramatics class had a performance for their parents, I made sure my Intro. to Theater class worked by themselves and I was merely over seeing.
  3. If one class was doing something physical, I planned so the next class was doing something more sedentary.
  4.  I found my students learned the best Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Because of this, I kept Monday and Friday’s lessons lighter.  I wouldn’t introduce a new unit until Tuesday (hoping to catch everyone and those who took a long weekend and missed Friday and Monday).
  5. Fridays were fun days for all of us.  I made sure that my Fridays were my best lessons to teach or those most engaging. Sometimes the students would view part of a video on a Friday.  That kept my teacher-to-student contact low and my maintained my energy.
  6. If I could work it out, I’d go out for lunch at least once a week.  Or, I’d bring in something special from the grocery store–like a deli sandwich or fancy salad.  It lifted the monotony.

More Answers to Burn out

  1. I’d plan for the next Monday on Friday and get everything copied and ready to go on Friday.  That way, when I came to school on Monday I wasn’t frazzled.  I even wrote the Monday date on the board and the objectives on Friday.😊
  2. Organizing everything for the next week by the Friday of the following week helped me a lot.
  3. I did not take home papers to grade every night.  Do NOT do it!
  4. This may sound odd, but I’d get my feet elevated for a portion of the day and sit down for heaven’s sake!
  5.  I made a little nest for myself in my classroom (my office was attached to the classroom) and I’d keep fun stuff such as an inspirational quote, a colorful coffee cup, etc.  It was my little space just for me.
  6.  Although I make friends easily, I’m choosey.  My friends and I would plan some social time outside of school or maybe a private party.  They needed it too!
  7. When I was bored with my lessons, chances are my students felt it.  So, I’d teach something new I’d learned about.
  8.  Walking for exercise and to de-stress was another thing I still do.  It helps wonders.
  9. I used every one of my personal days.  Use your personal days.  Did I say to use your personal days?????

What are the steps to producing a musical with youth?

That’s a difficult question for me to answer because it depends upon the grade level of the students and length/complexity of the show.

Let’s pretend you are a fifth grade teacher who wants to direct a musical with your students. First, what musical have you chosen?  How long is it?  Thirty minutes or an hour?  How many songs are there?  The size of the cast matters, too.

Imagine your wonderful principal paid for your class (haha) to produce an MTI Kids musical. You selected Jungle Book, Kids.  Terrific! Now I know what we’ve got to work with.  I can’t say enough good about Musical Theater International musicals, especially all of the junior and kids versions.

First, lets discuss the story: Banished by the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan, a human boy named Mowgli and his panther friend, Bagheera, are on the run in the deepest parts of the jungle. On their journey, the two meet a sinister snake named Kaa, a herd of elephants and a giant bear named Baloo, who teaches them the swingin’ musical rhythms of the jungle. After surviving a dangerous encounter with a band of monkeys led by King Louie, Mowgli and Bagheera are forced to run for their lives. When Shere Khan returns, our heroes must rally their fellow animals into battle and restore peace throughout the jungle.

Jungle Book has room for large cast so that’s wonderful for your students.  The show contains twelve songs–all very memorable and gleaned from the animated movie.  This helps you because the students will learn them quicker since they’ve probably heard them a bit.

The length of the musical matters, too. The show runs an hour with an intermission of fifteen minutes.  In other words, you have under sixty pages of material to direct.  (Remember there are twelve songs–that cuts into the scenes and lines quite a bit.)

Musical Theater Rehearsal Schedule Example

Let’s pretend it’s November 1.  You auditioned your class in October (prior to Halloween of course) and your first rehearsal is November 1, a Monday.  I would organize my rehearsals like this:

November 1–Read thru script, discuss the story, re-tell the story, etc.

November 2 to 4–Sing songs

November 5  Choreograph Song either the first musical number or the most difficult first (I discovered that if I got the toughest musical number out of the way near the beginning of the rehearsal schedule, we didn’t worry ourselves about it. Also, the students would have more time to review it than if we waited until its time in the script, such as near the end.)

Musical Theater Rehearsal Schedule Example

This is an example.  I can’t remember how many scenes or musical numbers Jungle Book, Kids contains.  Usually, I use a building block method with young students, grades 3 to 5th.

Nov. 8–Choreograph Song

Nov. 9–Run Song #1 and Song #2

Nov. 10–Choreograph Song #3

Nov. 11–At this point, the students need a change.  I would block scene 1 and run it with Song #1

Nov. 12–Run Song #2 and #3 and review scene 1 blocking once more

Nov.  13–Choreograph Song #4 and #5 (because they are beginning to know what to expect and they are picking it more quickly than at the beginning)

Nov. 16–Block scene two and three, choreograph song #5

Nov. 17–Block scene four and five, run songs 3 and 4

Nov. 18–Block scenes six and seven, choreograph song #6

Nov. 19–Polish scenes one and two with songs (OFF  BOOK)

Nov. 20–Polish scenes three and four with songs (OFF BOOK)

Nov. 23–Polish scenes five and six with songs (OFF BOOK)

Nov. 24–To be Announced (This gives you some wiggle room incase you get behind, there’s a fire drill that causes an up roar or whatever.)

Nov. 25–Run Songs with Choreography

Nov. 26–Run scenes only

Nov. 27–Run thru

Nov. 30–Run thru

Dec. 1–Run thru with props

Dec. 2–Run thru with props and costumes (Notice how I continue to add to the process?)

Dec.3–Dress rehearsal with props, costumes and set

Dec. 4–Dress rehearsal

Dec. 5–Perform!

In 1981 when I began directing youth theater, I over rehearsed and over blocked. I’m sure it was being too conscientious and also too controlling.  Now, I almost under rehearsed them so they’ll have an edge for the show.  THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN A SHOW THAT’S WORN OUT BEFORE IT OPENS. (I can always tell.)

So You Are Directing a Musical…Now What?

If you are directing older students, the rehearsal schedule is similar to directing adults if you are directing in a community theater.  Check out my post about community theater here: Are You Missing These Kind of People in Your Life?

Usually, my rehearsal calendar follows:

Two weeks of music–chorus numbers first (2 days) , small group (3 days) , solos (3 days) then the second week try practicing the Music in the order in which is appears in the musical (The magic here is to begin with the most difficult or complicated numbers first so they are completed early in the process)

Two weeks of choreography–large group numbers (3 days), small group numbers (3 days), solos (2 days) continuing in this fashion until everything is choreographed.

One week of blocking and/or staging (If you can, ask that everyone be off book at this time. Or at the very least calling for lines.)

Musical Theater Rehearsal Schedule Example

Two week of polishing each scene and act.  Usually, I rehearse an act at a time (The magic during this process is rehearsing act one–Monday, act two–Tuesday  THEN beginning the next time with act two–Wednesday  and then act one-Thursday. Friday is your first full run thru)

One week of run thrus (add props and set pieces if possible)

One day of cue to cues, two dress rehearsals and then open!

As the director, you may feel like you aren’t needed very much in this second rehearsal calendar.  You are incorrect.  Your mere presence helps a cast to feel secure and acknowledged for all of their enthusiasm and hard work. Just being present and cheering on your cast means the world to them.
