Teachers often ask me for  middle school play titles.  So, let’s talk about this today, 8 middle school plays that work every time.  I hope this list will help you as you consider what you’d like to direct in the next school year.  Having directed hundreds of play and musical for over 38 years, I have a vast experience in this subject. It is my goal to provide all the details and links that lead you to purchasing a preview of the scripts. 

Before you begin reading this post, please know that I am a purist.  I don’t do direct cute bunny or zombie storis, if you know what I mean.  Frankly, I think a teacher shouldn’t cater to the emotional level of the students but have high expectations of them.  What could be better than a play based on a classic novel or one with historical significance?

Here are a few I recommend you read and consider. I’ve listed these scripts in no particular order.

Synopsis: A refreshing, contemporary telling of the classic story. Stern Marilla and her warm-hearted brother Matthew hoped to adopt a boy to work on their farm. But the orphanage sends young, befreckled Anne by mistake, and their lives will never be the same. Her warmth and wit affect everyone around her – even, eventually, the cold Marilla. We follow Anne through her rebellious years, her transformation into a young woman, and her romantic pairing with Gilbert. This play has been charming audiences around the world. Tom Sawyer adapted by Tim Kelly

  • Drama/ Comedy
  • 9 to 11M., 12F  plus extras
  • 90 minutes in length

The child in all of us never gets tired of reliving again and again the antics and adventures of Tom, Huck, Becky Thatcher and all the rest of Mark Twain’s beloved characters. All the familiar characters are here—Huckleberry Finn, Aunt Polly, Becky Thatcher, Widow Douglas, Muff Potter, Cousin Mary and menacing Injun Joe. The action flows well, and scenes fly by in a lively fashion: the classic “fence-painting” scene, the school lessons from strict Mr. Dobbins, the eerie murder of Doc Robinson in the graveyard at midnight, the pirate journey to Jackson’s Island where buried treasure proves very dangerous, Tom’s side-splitting “funeral,” Tom’s courtship of Becky and other scenes from the immortal classic. During the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, the Nazis closed down Jewish-owned businesses and began to round up the Jews for relocation to concentration camps for the final solution. Danish freedom fighters of all ages risked everything in daring, hurried attempts to rescue the entire Jewish population. In this stirring play, young Annemarie and Kirsti Johansen face soldiers, interrogations, fierce dogs, personal danger, the loss of loved ones and their own fears as they try to help their friend Ellen Rosen escape across the ocean to Sweden and safely.

Orphan Train by Aurand Harris

  • Drama/Comedy
  • 6m., 7w., 6 boys, 6 girls, or 11 (1m., 1w., 3 boys, 6 girls) with doubling.
  • 65 minutes in length

The play tells the story of nine orphans on an “orphan train” that left New York City on May 28, 1914. The train travels to Midwestern towns in search of homes, any homes, anywhere for the orphaned and unwanted children. There’s Mary, Evie, spunky Pegeen, Annie and Little Lucy, a quiet one. Other orphans include Frank (who later becomes Frankie, a small girl), Raymond, Lucky and Danny the song-and-dance boy. And there are the men and women hoping for children. The lonesome whistle wails as the train chugs between encounters of anxiety, laughter, wistfulness, rejection and acceptance. Eight stories unfold, each a memorable surprise. The Orphan Train is a charming heart-warmer and all we expect from one of legendary playwrights for children, Aurand Harris. The staging creates a highly theatrical story, moving, amusing and always tellingly human.

The Princess Who Became King 

  • Drama

From the author of the very popular Anne of Green Gables. Freely adapted from an Indian tale, this spritely comedy serves up a blend of love, adventure and intrigue. On the eve of their wedding, Ravi and Parijata flee from their homes because their fathers are feuding — due to the schemes of an ambitious Guru. Parijata’s father is the terrible tempered Raja; Ravi’s father is the foolishly superstitious Sultan. On a dangerous forest journey, the Princess loses her amazing performing monkey, Zmarti, and is kidnapped by Gumba, a cloddish thief. After numerous chases and mistaken identities, the play ends in happy reunion and reconciliation and a surprise coronation! This play can be produced with colorful, elaborate scenery, or with almost no scenery at all.

Story Theater stories from Grimm Brothers and Aesop adapted by Paul Sills.

  • Drama/Comedy
  • When I direct this play, I split up the stories and used as many students as I needed for each one.
  • 90 minutes in length

Mr. Sills started in New Haven and wound up on Broadway with this group of famous fables from the Grimm Brothers and Aesop. Here you will meet again Henny Penny, the Golden Goose, Venus and the Cat, the Fisherman and His Wife, the Robber Baron, the Bremen Towson Musicians, and other favorites. The fables require talented actors with expressive bodies. And make no mistakes about the quality: this is top-drawer adult theatre.

The Little Princess adapted by June Walker Rogers

  • Drama
  • 6m 13F
  • 90 minutes in length

Sara Crewe is one of the most beloved fictional heroines, and June Walker Rogers has brought her to life in this funny, sad, wonderfully imaginative adaptation. Audiences will identify with Sara as she begins her adventures in “Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies”; laugh with her as she brings happiness to others; weep with her as her fortune changes from rich girl to poor orphan; and rejoice with her when strange events bring still another reversal of her destiny. This is a lovely play!

The Emperor’s New Clothes

  • Comedy
  • 11 actors, flexible (many of the roles can be played by men or women).
  • 50 minutes

A bright, crisp, well-tailored dramatization of the Hans Christian Andersen tale. Snip and Tuck, two swindlers posing as tailors, weave a jolly trick on Emperor Velvet, who is willing to sacrifice his castle, friends—even his Empress Velveteen and their children, Prince Terry Cloth and Princess Polly Ester—to buy the most luxurious new clothes available. As you might expect, the “tailors” pull the wool over everybody’s eyes until a homespun boy has the courage to speak the unadorned truth, and all the fools are uncovered at last—and the swindlers are turned over to Shroud, keeper of the (shh-whisper) dungeon. The cleverly patterned characters and silky smooth plot will keep your audiences in stitches. Sharon A. Cole brought the characters to life with strong but humorous personalities that your cast members will love playing. Every role is a gem.

The Bridge to Terabithia Adapted by author, Katherine Patterson

  • Drama
  • 3 Male 6 Female
  • 90 minutes in length

This powerful adaptation, supported by a lyrical score, focuses the humor, warmth and emotional intensity of Katherine Paterson’s Newbery Award winning novel.

Jesse, alienated from the pragmatism of his family and rural Virginia culture, draws and dreams of becoming something special. Then the new girl, Leslie, who just moved in from the city and the ultimate outsider, opens a world of imagination, art and literature for him

Together they create Terabithia, a fantasy kingdom where they are safe from those who don’t understand them. Their friendship grows as Jesse’s world expands. However, when tragedy strikes, the strength gained in Terabithia takes Jesse forward on his own and lets him share the magic of his dreams

Lastly, I wanted to include one of my favorites to direct around Halloween.  It’s just fun!

It’s a Howl! by Tim Kelly

  • Comedy
  • 8 M and 14W
  • 90 minutes in length

Teenager Jane Hastings inherits remote and creepy Wolfbane Abbey. It’s a combination school and clinic for students who have trouble “adjusting.” No wonder – they’re werewolves! To begin with, the doctor who runs the Abbey decides Jane must be driven out of her mind so he can be trustee. This isn’t as easy as it sounds – even though the place is filled with more horrors than a wax museum. With two friends, Jane does her best to sort out the Abbey’s problem and “curse.” The characters are great fun to play in this fast-paced spoof, including bewildered police, a werewolf hunter, weird students, a gypsy who spends most of her time in a scary laboratory, and a reporter from a scandal magazine. And that’s just for openers…don’t forget the vampire. Not surprisingly, laughs collide with screams and the ending has plenty of bite.

Today let’s talk about discovering creativity: a drama camp fairy tale adventure.  I heartily love summer for many reasons, do you?  Before I retired one of my favorite things to do in the summer, was to run a two week summer drama camp. Since I ran summer drama camps for thirty-eight years, this is one thing I really have down.  Are you thinking of running a camp this summer?

Summer is a perfect time for students to learn about subjects that they either do not have available to take in their school, or wish to learn more in depth.  Enter my Summer Drama Fairy Tale Camp Curriculum!

Tableau Theater:
Campers kick off their fairy tale adventure by delving into the art of tableau theater. Then, through group exercises and improvisation, they learn how to create striking frozen scenes. These poses cleverly convey emotion and narrative without words. This lesson sets the stage for exploring composition, expression, and storytelling through stillness.

Set Design Masterclass:
In this hands-on workshop, campers discover the magic of set design. From fantastical landscapes to royal castles, students brainstorm and sketch their own designs. At the same time, they  learn how to bring their imaginative visions to life on stage. With the templates provided, they explore the intricacies of set pieces required for each setting, sparking their creativity and transport potential audiences to far-off lands.

Lessons During Drama Camp

Chanting and Choral Performance:
Campers harness the power of voice and rhythm as they explore chanting and choral performance techniques. Through vocal warm-ups and group exercises, they develop their vocal skills and create captivating chants. These chants can  be used to enhance the atmosphere of their fairy tale world in the play.  As a result, this adds depth and authenticity to their performances.

Movement and Characterization:
Through movement exercises and character exploration, campers learn how to embody the personalities and traits of their favorite fairy tale characters. From graceful princesses to mischievous trolls, they discover the physicality and nuances that bring characters to life on stage. Ultimately, this  fosters a deeper understanding of character development and expression.

Storytelling:
Campers delve into the art of storytelling, learning how to captivate audiences with their words and imagination. Through interactive games and exercises.  In addition, they explore narrative structure, character development, and audience engagement.  They hone their storytelling skills and unleashing their creativity in the process. Plus, there is a whole day set aside for everyone to tell a story of their own life!

Creating Sound Effects and Beginning Playwriting:
In this interactive workshop, campers explore the world of sound effects. They do so by learning how to use everyday objects to create magical sounds and immersive audio environments. Working in small groups, the campers experiment with creating sound scenes by incorporating them into a short scene. The student write their own scene  and performing them for their peers. Consequently, they discover how sound can enhance the atmosphere and drama of their performances.

Costume Design Workshop:
Campers unleash their creativity as they explore the art of costume design. From princess gowns to wizard robes, they conceptualize, sketch, and create costumes design. The campers discover how they can bring their own fairy tale character to life. With four design templates provided, they have the freedom to customize their designs and express their unique vision.

Stage Properties:
Campers get hands-on experience studying stage properties and learning how to categorize props through fun activities. They discover the magic of stage properties, from magical wands to treasure chests, unleashing their creativity and attention to detail in bringing the world of fairy tales to life. If time allows, they can even make a few props for your production!

Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning

I’m a student of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning. Bloom’s Taxonomy focuses on cognitive development of intellectual abilities and skills. The cognitive learning domain can be classified in declarative and intellectual skills. Intellectual skills  include concepts, principles, procedures and rules which are applied in instances beyond instruction. In other words, it isn’t enough for a student to merely learn about something. They need to apply it for the students to retain the learning. 

Culminating in a Captivating Performance:
As the grand finale of the fairy tale adventure, campers bring the beloved classic “The Brave Little Tailor” to life on stage. With roles for 25+ students, this enchanting one-act play showcases the talents and creativity of young actors, transporting audiences to a world of adventure, courage, and magic.

Synopsis: “The Brave Little Tailor” follows the journey of a humble tailor who, through his wit and bravery, embarks on a series of daring adventures. In the end, even the King and Queen of the kingdom get involved.  And let’s not forget that fun song that’s included. (optional)

Life Lessons Learned at Summer Camp

One website, Simplelocalbillings.com had a nice article about the value of summer camp, “In the safe surroundings of summer camp, you can push yourself past your comfort zones and release your inner child in a judge-free environment. You learn to have faith in both yourself and the people around you, so that whatever seems scary, different, or impossible is often achievable at camp.”

Making New Friends at Camp

Another asset of summer camp is that students make new friends outside of their school.  This is important!  These experience demonstrate to the students that they are more than just the school they attend.  By doing so, it gives them a new and different perspective on themselves and how they fit into the world.

Today, I want to blog about the art of teaching: why following a script matters. Do you struggle with what to say to your students as you teach them? This isn’t an uncommon issue for most us, especially with our very first class.

When I began teaching, I was petrified. I was employed in a junior high school in the early 1980s (probably before most of you were even born.) I had never student taught the subject of English. My student teaching was in drama, my major. Truthfully, I only minored in education and psychology because I needed a minor. Plus, my father wanted for me to have something to “fall back upon” if I wasn’t successful as an actress. Once I was out of school and on my own, I quickly realized I wanted a roof over my head and food on the table every month.  Finding acting gigs was too uncertain  for my personality.

As I previously mentioned,  I was a nervous wreck when I began teaching.   Not only was I anxious about teaching English, but worried about my success at doing so. I worried a lot about what I was going to say to begin a lesson.  Even though I had a knack at creating lesson plans, the first few moments of class when I engaged the students seemed the most crucial to me. My second year of teaching

Recently, one of my email followers wrote to me saying, “Hi Deb.  Thank you for all of your great suggestions and tips.  My problem is I just don’t know what to say to get us started. Any suggestions?” Certainly.

Once you practice this pattern, you will be able to begin any lesson with confidence and ease. Here are a few things to consider.

The Art of Teaching: Why Following a Script Matters

  1.  How long do you want this introduction, or hook to last?  5 minutes? 10 minutes? Make that decision first.
  2. Ask the students a question (You can also use a quote, or a visual aid)
  3.  Respond to answers that the students give you.  Use their words to discuss your question.  For instance, “Susan said that she thinks theater began 2,000 years ago.  What do you think?”
  4. To keep all the students’ attention, do not address the next question to any certain student. By doing so, the other students will stop listening because in their minds you weren’t asking them.
  5.  From there, you transition into a warm up exercise that supplements the day’s learning.

Five Questions to Ask Students When Teaching

According to a wonderful site I discovered, Peopleleaders.com  here are the 5 questions recommended you ask your students (in their case, they are team members) I’ve adapted it for the classroom:

  1. What do you think? Not rocket science is it? This question is best asked after a statement or observation as it allows you to find out very quickly what your students thinking process and focus is. Encouraging your students to voice their opinion in an environment of curiosity and support is a powerful tool of engagement. Once unlocked, will lead to a culture of learning, trust and right action.
  2. What makes you think this? This question helps your students make connections to their ideas and thoughts with information they have actually experienced, seen, researched or heard. This also pushes them to provide more depth and a reason for their answer.
  3. Can you tell me more? Students are used to asking you questions, not answering them, and this will take time and patience on your part to get the answer. It also encourages your students to think more deeply about the issue. The pay-off is a more empowered and skilled students.
  4. What do you think are the next steps? This question rounds off the conversation or interaction with a call to action.  Your student considers the  idea of what to do and how to do it, and you have a level of comfort knowing what they are going to do.

You and I know that teaching is a dynamic and intricate craft. It requires educators to balance structured plans with flexibility to meet the diverse needs of their students. It is a difficult challenge at best.  In recent years, there has been a debate over whether teachers should adhere strictly to a script or have more autonomy in their lesson delivery has gained traction. Additionally, some school systems purchase particular textbooks for their students and expect (demand?) the teacher to use the teacher’s edition when teaching…yuck.

To be clear, there are times when teaching spontaneously is not only exciting but energizing! Some argue for the benefits of spontaneity and improvisation in teaching with all subjects, all of the time.  However, there are compelling reasons why teaching from a script is important for educators.

Holding Ourselves Accountable: The Importance of Scripted Instruction in Education

Let’s explore why following a script can be a valuable tool in the educator’s toolkit.

1. Consistency: For several years, I taught in a middle school. I taught about the beginning theater to 400 middle school students, every twenty-five days.   Couple this action with all the other demands of the job and some days you feel like you are stuck in a canyon somewhere, never able to climb out. You find yourself wondering, “Did I inform the students about X-Y-Z or did I think I did, but haven’t?” If you’d like to learn more about that experience, go to: Striking a Balance with Students in Their Middle School Years

Teaching from a script ensures that every student receives the same information and instruction. If you have a substitute taking your class, a script is monumentally important for them.  Consistency is crucial for student learning.  By doing so, it provides a stable foundation upon which to build knowledge and skills. When teachers follow a script, they minimize the risk of overlooking key concepts or leaving gaps in understanding among their students.

2.. Clarity: Scripts provide a clear roadmap for teachers to follow during instruction. They outline learning objectives, essential content, and instructional strategies in a structured format. This clarity helps teachers stay focused and on track. This reduces the likelihood of you veering off course or getting lost in tangents during lessons. And we do get lost, don’t we? For students, clear and organized instruction facilitates comprehension and retention of material.

3. Efficiency: Time is a precious commodity in the classroom. Teaching from a script can help maximize instructional time. By having a predetermined plan in place, teachers can avoid wasting time. There will be less time spent deliberating over what to teach next or how to present information. Instead, they can devote more time to engaging with students, providing individualized support, and facilitating meaningful learning experiences. 4. Professional Development: Scripts can serve as valuable resources for both novice and experienced teachers. When I develop a teacher’s scripts for my resources, I enjoy discovering information about the topic which I hadn’t previously considered. For new teachers, following a script can provide a scaffold for developing effective instructional practices. Plus, it’s a terrific way to gain confidence in the classroom. Experienced teachers can use scripts as a springboard for reflection, Or use a script to refine of the one’s teaching strategies. Plus, if a teacher asks for student feedback about the learning, teachers can continuously improve their practice.

5. Equity: Teaching from a script can help promote equity in education.  By doing so, all students should have consistent access to high-quality instruction. Scripts provide a baseline standard of teaching that is consistent across classrooms and schools. This is valuable asset!  Regardless of factors such as teacher experience or expertise, by following a script a teacher can have confidence that their students are learning. Most importantly, it is the same information as the students study in another school in the district. This consistency helps level the playing field for students from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, it ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed academically.

6. Accountability: Following a script can provide a measure of accountability for teachers and schools. Scripts often align with curriculum standards and learning objectives.  This ensures that teachers cover the necessary content within a given timeframe.

Theater Teachers as Trailblazers

Theater teachers are notorious for creating their own scope and sequence, never conferring with other theater teachers in their school district.  It can be rare for them to follow state standards, because no one ever addresses them with us. Let’s be honest here.  If no one asks for them, why should a teacher address them when they have so many other responsibilities? Plus, not all states have theater arts benchmarks. To be honest, I think we like to make our own path. During my entire teaching career, no one ever held me to benchmarks. 

In some districts, we are part of the Language Arts department. In still others, we are part of the Art department.  Generally, we are a one person show and you can feel like the bastard child. It can be very lonely. Because we are creative beings, some like to wing it in the classroom.  My advice is not to get into that habit, because it’s tough to pull out of when you need to do so. By developing scripts, you have a basic outline of sorts.  If something works well this year, you can note that for next year.

Equity in Education: The Role of Scripts in Promoting Fairness

Additionally, scripted programs may include built-in assessments or checkpoints to monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions. This accountability fosters transparency. Plus, it helps stakeholders track the effectiveness of teaching practices. So, the day your principal walks into the class to do their impromptu observation, you are ready because you have a script to provide to them which coincides with yours. Easy, peasy.

Teacher’s Script and Criticism of It

Teaching from a script is not without its criticisms. However it is important to recognize the valuable role that scripted instruction can play in supporting effective teaching and student learning. By providing consistency, clarity, efficiency, professional development opportunities, equity, and accountability, scripts empower teachers to deliver high-quality instruction that meets the needs of all learners.

When I think back to those first years, I remember them fondly waxing nostalgic about the good experiences. I probably learned the most about teaching in my first three years. Ultimately, the art of teaching lies in finding the balance. The balance of  following a script and incorporating creativity and flexibility to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for students. Simply put, they are just another tool to use in your teaching.

Adapting spooky radio plays for high school students to perform is a skill in which I excel. I’ve adapted short stories, folk tales and even original works for over thirty-eight years. In that time, I found that high school love to scare themselves and others.  However, before we do so, let’s talk about royalties.  There are no royalties to pay if you use my scripts.  I’d appreciate either a resource review or mention in your program if you produce this for the public.

The Story:

Frankenstein’s Mystery begins where the original story leaves off. How about a radio drama script adapted from W.W. Jacob’s class, gothic story, The Monkey’s Paw? 

This twenty-five script has 23 +roles (including crew) and was adapted especially for the classroom. Strengthen your students’ listening, speaking, and reading skills all at once. It’s a one stop shop!

“The Monkey’s Paw” is a horror short story by English author W. W. Jacobs, first published in the collection The Lady of the Barge in 1902. In the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey’s Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate.

The Cast of Amontillado

The Cask of Amontillado radio theater unit adapted by Deborah Baldwin

Adapted from Edgar Allen Poe’s classic, gothic story, The Cask of Amontillado, this script has 15 + roles (plus crew) and was written especially for the upper middle school classroom!

The Cask of Amontillado is a story of revenge, deceit, and murder, as Montresor tricks a drunk Fortunato by trapping him inside an ancient catacomb. Poe’s story uses irony in the writing elements of his characters and setting.

Why do we like to frighten ourselves?

According to an article in Forbes.com, “You get an adrenaline rush. Experiencing fear triggers the body’s fight, flight or freeze response, leading to the release of adrenaline. This can be exhilarating and pleasurable for many people, as it can make them feel more alert and alive.”

“The gene associated with the reward neurons in the amygdala is involved in dopamine signaling — and dopamine is the neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure. Understanding the Basics of Storytelling:

In my experience, I’ve found that students enjoy storytelling.  In a theater class, it is much lesson threatening than performing a monologue. Consequently, I always include a storytelling unit in my yearly lesson plans. When you begin teaching storytelling to your students, first introduce the fundamental elements of a story. Although your students may be aware of these elements, sometimes a quick review of the key components is necessary.  Reiterate stories which have  characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. Use examples from literature, movies, or real-life situations to illustrate these concepts.  This makes the learning more relatable to your students. Immersive Storytelling Activities for Early Finishers:

Engage your students in interactive activities that immerse them in the world of storytelling. One idea is to create a storytelling corner in your classroom.  Your early finishers will appreciate this. Encourage them to collaborate on developing and sharing their stories. Again, a reminder of a story’s components  could be useful, especially if students are working independently.  Generally, students need your help in the fleshing out of the story–that is describing settings, characters, and emotions. 

Essentially, you each them the five C’s, Circumstance, Curiosity, Characters, Conversations, and Conflicts that captivate audiences’ interest. The circumstance is all about establishing the scene. A storyteller must provide essential information to their audience including — when, where, and why.

Utilize Technology:

Embrace technology as a tool to enhance storytelling experiences. Platforms like digital storytelling apps, interactive whiteboards, or podcast creation tools can make the process more dynamic. Students can explore multimedia elements to enhance their narratives, including images, music, and sound effects. Encourage Freewriting Sessions:

Foster a love for writing by incorporating freewriting sessions into your lessons. Set aside dedicated time for students to let their imaginations run wild without worrying about grammar or structure. This practice helps them discover their unique voice and allows creativity to flow freely.  The Writing Process, expresses it, “ increases the flow of ideas and reduces the chance that you’ll accidentally censor a good idea. Additionally, it helps to increase fluency second-language learners—i.e., the ability to produce written language easily as opposed to accuracy.”

Showcase Diverse Stories:

Introduce a variety of stories from different cultures, genres, and perspectives. Exposing students to diverse narratives  only helps to broaden their understanding of the world.  Additionally, it inspires them to explore various storytelling styles. Teachers can encourage discussions about the cultural and emotional aspects of these stories. Incorporate Storytelling in Different Subjects

I strongly urge you to integrate storytelling into various subjects, not just drama class or language arts. Whether it’s creating historical narratives, science fiction stories, or math-related scenarios, connecting storytelling to different subjects makes learning more holistic and enjoyable. Peer Feedback and Collaboration:

I find it you foster a collaborative environment where students can share their stories with peers, reluctant students are less disinterested in your class. Implement peer feedback sessions, emphasizing constructive criticism and positive reinforcement. This not only improves storytelling skills but also enhances communication and teamwork. Assessment through Reflection:

Choosing what a teacher wants to focus on in storytelling is important.  My advice is to focus on creativity, clarity, and emotional impact. Encourage your students to reflect on their own storytelling journey, identifying areas of growth and setting goals for improvement. This reflective process reinforces the learning experience and encourages a growth mindset.

In conclusion, teaching storytelling in the classroom is more than imparting a set of skills. It’s about nurturing creativity, empathy, and effective communication. By implementing these strategies, we empower our students to become confident storytellers. Today, I want to give you a brief history of showtime chronicles: history of musical theater unveiled. Musical theater is one of my favorite genres to teach to theater students.  It’s fascinating!

Honestly, I  shouldn’t be surprised by my love of musical theater.  It’s in the family genes. Permit me to explain.

Musical Theater Talent is in the Genes

My grandparents were missionaries in Japan in the 1900s to late 1930s.  My mother was born and raised there.  At that time,  there were few Americans living in Japan.  Additionally, my grandparent’s presence was always in the public eye. My grandfather was a minister; my grandmother created the very first kindergarten in Japan.  Consequently, the Japanese government was familiar with them.

When my mother was eleven years old, she was invited to sing the Japanese national anthem at a prestigious ceremony for Emperor Hirohito. I’m sure it was an amazing experience for everyone, including my grandparents.  However, throughout my mother’s life, she had many regrets for her performance. She should have basked in the once in a lifetime experience as a fond memory.

Unfortunately,  she forgot the words to the anthem. Sadly, that’s all she remembered about the experience. Did I mention she was singing in Japanese? That was a big ask of a little shy girl to sing for important people and the public. She had a lovely voice.

Musical Theater is Our Family’s Jam

My elementary music teacher, who also a member of our church, noticed my singing voice when I was about the same age. She planned for me to sing “Oh Holy Night” for a Christmas service. As you’d expect, I was ecstatic about this opportunity and hugely disappointed when it didn’t occur.  Looking back, I wasn’t ready to sing solos publicly.  It took me more than six years before I felt comfortable singing solos in choir and musicals.

However, to this day I enjoy singing in large groups but I especially enjoy singing in musicals. Once I was confident, I never looked back! (Above I am playing the role of Nancy in Oliver! with Columbia Entertainment Company.)

Not surprisingly, my own daughters have performed in several musicals.  One is a professional actress and continues to perform.  (Below, she is performing in Man of La Mancha at Musical Theatre Heritage.)

“The Black Crook” (1866): Often considered the first American musical, The Black Crook combined elements of a French ballet with a melodramatic plot. This groundbreaking production set the stage for the integration of music, dance, and drama.

Show Boat (1927): Adapted from Edna Ferber’s novel, this musical by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II tackled serious themes such as racial prejudice and spousal abuse. Most importantly, Show Boat is recognized for its innovation in storytelling and integration of music and plot.

Act 2: The Golden Age of Broadway

Carousel (1945): A collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Carousel delved into deeper and more complex themes than its predecessor, Oklahoma! The musical explored issues of love, redemption, and second chances.

The Sound of Music (1959):** Another masterpiece by Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Sound of Music became one of the most beloved musicals of all times, telling the heartwarming story of the von Trapp family against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Austria. Act 3: Evolution and Experimentation

Rent (1996):This rock musical by Jonathan Larson was a modern reimagining of Puccini’s opera La Bohème. Rent addressed contemporary issues such as AIDS, poverty, and the struggle for artistic expression, marking a departure from traditional musical theater themes.

Wicked(2003): With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked offered a fresh perspective on the classic story of “The Wizard of Oz.” Interestingly, it explored the untold backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North, challenging perceptions of good and evil. Act 4: Diversity and Inclusion

In the Heights (2008): Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights celebrates the vibrant culture of the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City. With a fusion of hip-hop, salsa, and traditional musical styles, the show highlighted the dreams and struggles of a diverse community. Pick up my unit of it here.
