Should Middle School Directors Cast Every Student?

Part of my weekly activities is reading  various Facebook drama teachers group posts.  One subject is  mentioned at least once a month.  So let’s discuss Should Middle School Directors Cast Every Student?

No matter the grade level, whenever you direct (and produce) a youth theater play, one of the biggest challenges is auditions.  Every middle school theatre director eventually faces this question. Auditions are over, the sign-up sheet is full, and more students showed up than the script allows. Though exciting that many students want to be involved in your program it can be a worry, too!

Do you cast every student who auditions—or do you stick to the number of roles written in the script?

There isn’t a single “right” answer. But there are thoughtful, student-centered ways to approach the decision.

Why This Question Comes Up So Often in Middle School

Middle school students are incredibly brave just for auditioning. Many are trying theatre for the first time, stepping outside their comfort zone. Or they audition  responding to encouragement from a teacher or friend. Directors feel a natural pull to reward that courage with a role. We know how much a student’s life can change by being a part of the school production–it’s transformative.

There’s also the practical reality–numbers. Programs need participation to survive. This challenge is a every year.  I know I’ve sweated it out myself.  Administrators and parents often view theatre as inclusive by nature. Plus, teachers don’t want to discourage students from coming back. Even the most shy students can blossom on a stage.  Consequently, we like to include those students to see if it helps them.

These are valid concerns—and they deserve thoughtful consideration.

When Casting Every Student Can Be the Right Choice

Casting every student can work well in certain situations, especially when the show itself allows flexibility. Flexibility is the key. This approach tends to succeed when:

The script includes an ensemble, chorus, or expandable roles–this is the easiest way to include more students.

Additional characters can be added without harming the story–instead of one policeman, you have two. Instead of four children, you have six.

Every student has a clear purpose onstage. This is something you’ll have to teach them.  Use the 9 questions as a guide for them to create a character.  You can find out about them at: Uta Hagen’s Nine Questions resource.

Rehearsal time, space, and supervision allow for a larger cast. A word of warning here–you have to recruit extra adults to help oversee them. Without the supervision, a director can’t expect these students to behave appropriately. They are still learning theater etiquette.  Additionally, they are learning how to become an adult! Plus, it’s a liability issue. Usually, I had an adult assistant director who “rode the herd”, so to speak.

Inclusive Theater: When To Cast Everyone in Middle School

When I directed Fiddler on the Roof, Jr., I remember hearing a surprising amount of gossip about the single bed we had preset backstage. Comments like, “So-and-so were sitting too close—I bet they like each other,” circulated even though an adult was present at all times.

If the middle school Are you considering process or product with the show?  If it’s process, then casting many students will not impeded the show.  However, it is difficult to keep large numbers of children (because they still are) focused for longer than fifteen minutes.  Remember, their teachers usually change activities in their classes every fifteen or twenty minutes.  These brief learning times carries over to rehearsal and some students can’t adjust.

The key is intention. Casting everyone should mean actively including students—not simply placing them onstage with nothing meaningful to do. I know of one director who cast three different groups of Oompa Loompas for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  Now, that’s just a crime.  No one really gets anything out of that kind of arrangement.

Two Very Different Casting Realities

In summer camps, I usually cast everyone because for some students this is the only time they can participate, especially if they are from a small town with no formal theater programs in their schools.

However, this idea did not work in a school production.  The principal manipulated me into casting 68 (yes, you read that correctly) middle school students in Fiddler on the Roof, Jr.  It was extremely stressful not just because of the numbers. Because these students were also involved in track and their coach wanted them at practices just as much as I did at rehearsals.  I tried to drop the students from the production, but the principal got in the way of that.  Oh, it was a terrible experience.

When Following the Script Makes Sense

It is also completely appropriate—and sometimes necessary—to limit the cast.

Following the script closely may be the best choice when:

The story relies on specific, well-defined roles.  If the play is titled, Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, there can only be five children. Or casting the class and very popular Sound of Music–-everyone knows there were only seven children.

Adding characters would weaken the storytelling.  Adding an extra Dracula to the play would not work at all.  You get what I mean.

Rehearsal logistics become unmanageable. Usually, middle school productions are relegated to the school cafetorium.  If you are unfamiliar with them think of a cafeteria with a stage located at the end of one wall.  It’s horrible, but it can work.

Students would be underused or disengaged. Yes, that occurs sometimes when a director/teacher pads roles.

The director wants to honor the playwright’s structure and intent. By far this is the best reason!

Not every “no” is a rejection. Sometimes it’s a way of protecting the quality of the production. If the musical needs good singers who can sing difficult music, then including someone who doesn’t see well can hamper the atmosphere.

The learning experience of the students could be hindered if too many people were added to the production. If a production is a classic such as The Sound of Music, it just doesn’t help the story if you add twenty-five extra nuns.  There is simply not enough for them to do in the production.  If the student feels taken advantage of or patronized, they may never audition for you again. Tip:  If you call your ensemble make certain your rehearse them that day. If not, you are sure to lose cast members.

Finding the Middle Ground

For many directors, the best solution lives somewhere in between. Personally, I like to double cast youth theater productions. Usually, when I double cast, I’m guaranteed to have one of the double cast students  attend rehearsals.  I don’t like conflicts, but I discovered most of the time students are absent is because of illness.

Some alternatives to consider:

Creating understudy or swing positions.  Personally, I think there is little payoff to being an understudy.  Students this age don’t consider this an honor or compliment.  I think it sends a message of, “Your audition was good, but just not good enough to warrant a role.”  Eek.

Adding narrators or small featured moments.  Yes, this is a good way to include more students.  At the beginning of Into the Woods I’ve added additional narrators and created a chorus for particular moments in the music which sort of invite extra character such as at the end of act one.

Keeping the Door Open: More Ways for Students to Belong

Offering meaningful technical theatre roles with real responsibility. A great way to learn more about the theater is to work on the stage crew.  In college, the theater department required freshmen to put in hours on crew or work in the stage or costume shops.  Because I worked backstage, I learned how important every technical aspect was to the success of the show.

Providing additional performance opportunities through class projects, readers or radio theatre, or showcases. One of the reasons this is a good idea is that is demonstrates there is more to theater than just a play or musical.  Maybe they are excellent mimics and great at creating a voice for a character?

Tell them about the readers theater or radio theater shows you have planned for later in the year.  By doing so, it keeps a door with more opportunities open for them. Here’s a radio theater play that gets lots of stars:  The Monkey’s Paw Radio Play.  Also popular is the readers theater script of The Little Girl and the Winter Whirlwinds. I adapted them to include more students than you’d expect, but it works well in both pieces.

What I always tell my students after casting

After auditions, I would remind my students that the production is not a be-all-end all situation. I invite them to look around the community and see where else they can audition for a production.  Community theater is a super place for these students. In a community theater, they’ll meet people who enjoy theater as much as they do.  They’ll make friends with adults, too.  Some students have little exposure to adults and observing them rehearsing or how they behave, teaches them a lot.

If a student can afford it, I suggest to them to take voice and dance lessons. Several of my students took voice lessons and strengthen their singing and confidence.  A dance class can build their coordination. Or join the drama club if you have one.  It’s another place students can spend time with their friends just enjoying the art form for fun.  If you need a resource for this, check out: Fairy Tale Camp

However, don’t be surprised if they never audition again. They may have found something else they want to do with their time such as sports.  Sometimes a student will take off a year and then return the following year.  My casts become like family and the student may miss that comradery, especially if they don’t feel seen the rest of the time at school.

Lastly, these options reinforce an important lesson: theatre is more than being center stage. This is so important to learn at a young age.

What Matters Most

Middle school theatre is not about perfection. It’s about growth.

Students learn courage by auditioning and resilience by not always being cast.  Additionally, they learn to collaborate by working toward a shared goal. Directors serve students best when they are honest, thoughtful, and intentional—not when they try to please everyone. Casting decisions aren’t just about filling roles. They’re about creating the strongest learning environment possible for the students you serve. Let’s not even begin to discuss what to do with disgruntled parents after auditions…

Every so often, someone reaches out to me and asks if I can help spread the word about an organization that’s making a real difference in theater education. I’m always willing to consider it.  That’s part of my mission statement.  When I see a program that opens doors for students and inspires teachers, I’m always eager to share it. Today’s spotlight is on one of those opportunities: Who Is Springboard to Action and Why It Matters.

Who is Springboard to Design and Why It Matters

Springboard to Design encourages and mentors high school students from underrepresented populations to explore the process of theatrical collaboration and the many avenues of American Theatre design. Led by renowned members of the contemporary theatre in the heart of NYC, the Springboard to Design curriculum includes workshops, seminars, and access to important work on and off Broadway.

Springboard to Action

Instructors consist of award-winning artists who create a collaborative environment for students, as they explore costume, set, lighting, projection, hair, makeup, and sound design. How wonderful this is for the students! Knowing that someone who the students can relate to because of their background or culture or ethnicity is important.  Such an approach ensures that the program is not all about teaching and learning—it’s about connection.

Springboard to Design is an initiative by Design Action, an intergenerational coalition of BIPOC and white designers working to end racial inequities in North American theatre. The program was incubated in collaboration with the American Theatre Wing in 2021. In the summer of 2025, Springboard to Design was hosted at The Harvey Fierstein Theatre Lab housed in The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in the heart of Lincoln Center.

In case you want to share this information with your students, here’s a quick list of how this program benefits students:

Breaking Barriers for Future Theater Artists

The program includes workshops and mentorship from award-winning artists. Students explore costume, set, lighting, sound, hair, makeup, and projection design in the heart of New York City. Here’s the exciting part—the SB2D program is FREE to all students.

Springboard to Design (SB2D) gives students the chance to dive into the world of theatre design and discover new artistic possibilities, no experience required! With housing available and tuition fully covered, this program is built to remove barriers for the next generation of theatre designers. Thus, students expand their sense of community, collaboration, and imagination.

Springboard to Design is all ready a winner!  The program was recognized by the 2022 and 2023 Anthem Awards as a Bronze Winner for Education, Arts, & Culture – Community Engagement.

Application Details and Deadlines

The applications for the 2026 program are open from September 15th to December 15th, 2025.

The application will include a few short essays, a brief introduction video, and an original piece of artwork.

There is a $25 application fee. If for any reason you are unable to afford the fee, or if it causes stress on family finances. If so, please contact us to receive a voucher. This application fee goes directly back into the program and helps keep the week-long experience free for students.

The Power of Finding Your Community

I can only speak from personal experience.  When I attended college I finally found people who were just like me with the same interests and goal.  I was much more willing to show up for myself.  Sounds to me like Springboard to Action is the opportunity and growth we’d all like to give our students an opportunity to attain.  For more information about the program, go to Springboard for Action.

Adapting spooky radio plays for high school students to perform is a skill in which I excel. I’ve adapted short stories, folk tales and even original works for over thirty-eight years. In that time, I found that high school love to scare themselves and others.  However, before we do so, let’s talk about royalties.  There are no royalties to pay if you use my scripts.  I’d appreciate either a resource review or mention in your program if you produce this for the public.

How about a radio drama script adapted from W.W. Jacob’s class, gothic story, The Monkey’s Paw? 

This twenty-five script has 23 +roles (including crew) and was adapted especially for the classroom. Strengthen your students’ listening, speaking, and reading skills all at once. It’s a one stop shop!

“The Monkey’s Paw” is a horror short story by English author W. W. Jacobs, first published in the collection The Lady of the Barge in 1902. In the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey’s Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate.

The Cast of Amontillado

Adapted from Edgar Allen Poe’s classic, gothic story, The Cask of Amontillado, this script has 15 + roles (plus crew) and was written especially for the upper middle school classroom!

The Cask of Amontillado is a story of revenge, deceit, and murder, as Montresor tricks a drunk Fortunato by trapping him inside an ancient catacomb. Poe’s story uses irony in the writing elements of his characters and setting.

Why do we like to frighten ourselves?

According to an article in Forbes.com, “You get an adrenaline rush. Experiencing fear triggers the body’s fight, flight or freeze response, leading to the release of adrenaline. This can be exhilarating and pleasurable for many people, as it can make them feel more alert and alive.”

“The gene associated with the reward neurons in the amygdala is involved in dopamine signaling — and dopamine is the neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure. It is not just dopamine and oxytocin that contribute to the post-scare high. People also experience a rush of endorphins following a scare.” Thanks to Medicalnewstoday.com for this bit of wisdom.

Ten Steps in a Play Rehearsal in Youth Theater is one of those subjects you figure anyone who has acted at least once will know. Not so. This is a two part post.  Next time, I’ll give you the rest of it, ok?

Lately, I’ve read several posts from newbie teachers with no idea about the steps of the rehearsal process for a play or musical.  That seems odd to me, but maybe they are teachers whose focus is Language Arts, Social Studies? I know that sometimes the administration will ask to direct the school play or supervise the drama club, so that could be the reason for the unfamiliarity.

Regardless, I will take you through the process for both a play and musical.  You can depend upon this process to prepare your young actors because I’m an expert in directing youth theater.  Having directed over 350 plays and musicals with both adults and children, I know the process like the back of my hand.

Step One: Selecting the Script

Before you, the director, do anything you of course must read several scripts and decide upon the one you like the most. I suggest you check out: Dramatic Publishing Company or  Dramatists Play Service. but there are many more just as good.  Keep in mind the number of characters, scenes, props and costumes.  All that will matter when you begin to mount the production.  I could write a whole post just about how to select a play or musical, but instead check out: Critical Steps in Selecting a Play or Musical: Casting

After you’ve chosen the play, you may want to announce it to your students.  When?  It depends upon when you plan to announce it and when the production is to be performed.  Me?  I announce a month ahead of the auditions and no sooner.  I don’t like for students to focus on the show too much ahead of time.  Before you know it, they’ve precast the whole show, purchased their own copy of it and maybe memorized lines.  Oh, no, no, no!

Step Two:  Auditions

Auditions will take a few days:

Day 1 and 2 Auditions

Day 3  Call backs

Day 4  Cast Announced

You may think this is a short time, but that’s what we are going for here.  Do your best not to drag out the audition process–the outcome becomes too important to the students.

Advice:  If you have an auditions and allow students to watch one another audition, then you may consider announcing to them something along the lines of, “From now on until the show is cast your behavior and attitude matter to me.  No distractions are tolerated by me. I expect you to be quiet and attentive. No phones may be out.  If someone happens to record another student’s audition and posts it publicly, the guilty party will be denied a role in the play.  This is an unbending rule.”

Casting Tips

I also remind them that, “Although at the present moment it may feel like this is the only play in the world in which you could be cast, this isn’t true.  This isn’t the be all, end all.  Check around the city and see if anyone else is producing a show you could audition for and participate elsewhere.”

Post the cast list either on a Friday afternoon  (when you can leave the school or theater for the weekend and give students time to unruffle their disappointed feathers) or post on-line on your website. Handling emails from parents on Monday is another blog post….someday.

Step Three:  Cast and Crew Read-Through

I’m old school, so I still call this meeting the “read-through.”  Some people now call it a table read (I always thought that was only used for television or movies), but no matter. At this read-through, I ask the cast and crew to introduce themselves and the role or position they are filling.

Next, it’s time to share my concept for the production.  I might have a collage of photos, textures, colors or I might just talk about my thoughts.  Personally, I think a collage is the best because then everyone knows what you consider the color blood red, for example.

We read through the show.  If I have a stage manager, they read aloud the stage directions.  This is to give the cast a feel for the play not that we are going to use these directions.  Not everyone knows that the stage directions that are printed in the script are honoring the first cast to have ever performed the play.  It is not required that you use the directions.

The stage manager hands out a rehearsal schedule. I make it clear to the cast and the crew that their attendance matters.  They all ready know the absence policy because I gave it to them at the auditions.

Step Four:  Blocking Rehearsals

In the coming days, we begin blocking the play.  If I am able to do so, I tape the stage giving the cast an idea of the size of the set, where stairs and doors are located, etc.  Usually, I use folding chairs in place of the furniture.  Everyone is aware that the chairs signify particular pieces of furniture.

Depending upon the length of the play, I usually block about 5 to 8 pages at the first rehearsal.  Why not many?  Because the cast is adapting to the script, plus the stage and my direction. Some young students need to write down their blocking before they even step on the stage.  That’s your call.

Advice:  You will not find that novice actors having a sense of blocking and staging.  They can not block themselves nor frankly should they.  You are teaching them about acting in a play–that’s part of the responsibility of someone directing youth theater.

The Blocking Process

I use a building block process when directing. Usually, I have two hour rehearsals with one ten minute break at half.

Day 1 block pages 1 to 8

Day 2 block pages 9 to 15 (or when there is a change in the mood or rhythm of the play) If a character enters the stage for the first time, they will change the dynamics of the play–I promise you. The playwright writes the scene this way on purpose.  So, block to the entrance of the character. (When a character enters or exits the stage it is called a French scene.)

Day 3 block pages 16 to 20, review blocking 1 to 8.  Less new pages to block, more time to spend on reviewing the first day’s blocking.

Day 4 block pages 21 to 26, review blocking 9 to 15 and so forth

Day 5 block pages 27 to 30, review Day 3 and Day 4 blocking.

Blocking Rehearsal

This part of rehearsal would continue until the play is completely blocked–a few new pages, several pages of review, until I am finished.

If you have a difficult scene (such as the dinner scene in The Miracle Worker between Helen and Annie), I take an entire rehearsal to block it.

Do I expect everyone to attend each rehearsal?  No, I’d rather they did not.  It’s just more students for me to be responsible for, more chances for talking and whatever else might bug me that day.  🙂

Step Five:  Working and Developing Rehearsals and Off Book

Let’s say I have everything blocked by Day 10.  Next we go into working and developing rehearsals.  Working rehearsal are just that–we work through the play a few pages at the time (probably using two days of blocking at a time) and fix any problem areas or give the students more opportunities to practice together. Developing is just a fancy name for giving the play “air” as I call it.  I give the cast a chance to settle into the play, adding their ideas here and there.

Advice:  I expect students to practice on their own time–reviewing their blocking and memorizing their lines.  I do not use rehearsals for line memorization. Those days can be excruciating for all of us as we listen to someone struggling with their lines.  Frankly, it makes everyone listening anxious. Students should be off book for act one by Day 10 and act two by Day 15. Here is a blog post with three proven methods for memorizing lines: Three Ways to Memorize Lines for a Play or Musical I’m strict about this. What is off book?  It is the day when the actors rehearse without a script in their hands. They can call for lines, but if it’s obvious they have not memorized their lines, I make them practice with their script as to not bring the mood of the rehearsal down.

Never Underestimate the Influence of Teaching with Videos

When I began teaching, we didn’t have videos to show students anything pertaining to theater. Friends, never underestimate the never underestimate the influence of teaching with videos!

That was 1980 and the closest thing we had was an old projector which showed black and white films.  Yuck. Part of the reason this was uninspiring to students is as we know, theater is a visual art.  Plus, it gives students a concrete example of the quality of work professionals turn out. Consequently, not many students enrolled in drama classes.

I was looking around for more reasons why teaching with video works. I ran on to www.nextthoughtsstudios.com I found this quote helpful:   “Studies have shown that the use of short video clips allows for more efficient processing and memory recall. The visual and auditory nature of videos appeals to a wide audience and allows each user to process information in a way that’s natural to them. In a nutshell, videos are good teachers.”

Things are different now, huh?

Practically with the snap of a finger, a teacher can search for what she wants and show it in her classroom within a few minutes.

Creating products gives me oppportunities to see many videos worth viewing in the theater classroom.  I thought they might be of benefit to you, too!

Primarily, these videos are located on youtube.com.  If your school allows you to use Youtube. com, you will be good to go.  I’ve also mentioned several videos that you could rent or purchase for your classroom.

Hamilton!

Let’s Look at Hamilton, first!

There are many videos of Hamilton.  However one that I especially like is: Adam Savage Examines the Props of Hamilton.

Let’s begin with set design. Set Design for Hamilton is terrific.  It’s only 3 minutes in length. Fascinating stuff here.

The lighting design for Hamilton is awesome! Behind the Scenes with a Hamilton Stagehand Who Told Stories with LightsThis one shows what its like for a stagehand.  So interesting.  (5:58 mins.)

The costume design for Hamilton is a Hamilton Designers Explain How Costumes are Made I think you’ll learn something new here. (29:42 mins.)

Hamilton is available on line through DisneyPlus only.  Honestly, I’d sign up for DisneyPlus just to have the opportunity to show it to my students.

Wicked!

Behind the Emerald Curtain is a series of videos which were created for the express purpose of education.

Wicked Behind the Emerald Curtain is a fascinating interview with the costume designer, Susan Hilferty. There is more information here than just costume design, so take a look at this! (5:35 mins.)

In this video, the choreographer for Wicked explains the difference between choreography and staging a musical. See how the entire world of Wicked the musical was choreographed.  (4:47 mins.)

Who is an expert in stage smoke, fog and torches?  This man is. You’ll want to check out the special effects of Wicked for certain. Wicked: Special Effects (3:37 mins.)

Good news!  A movie version of Wicked is slated to begin productions in the summer of 2022.  Cynthia Erivo will pay Elfaba and Arianna Grande will be Glenda.  How wonderful will that be?

Now that the Dear Evan Hansen movie has been released, this would be a fantastic time to study the musical.

David Korins, Set Design of Dear Evan Hansen shares an incredible story about his creative process. (3:43 mins.)

Here is a short piece on the Genius Design of Lighting of Dear Evan Hansen you simply must show your students! In this video clip, the announcer explains the complexity and number of light cues used in one part of a song.  Amazing.  (3:13 mins.)

Maybe you need something physical for your students to do? You could use this as a warm-up of even lesson for the day.  Check out Dear Evan Hansen Dance Combo (27:01 mins.)

Spongebob Squarepants

Oh my gosh, friends.  Spongebob Squarepants is such fun and your younger students will really enjoy learning about it.

You’ll want to look at the interview of a set designer. Set Designer David Zinn ( 7:00 mins.) I enjoy how he explains his concept of the musical, but also explains how color, the use of unusual objects and looking at the story as a child would.

Davis Zinn is exceptionally talented!  He designed the costumes for the production as well.  Explore the Costumes of Spongebob Squarepants.  (2:56 mins.) Your students will love what he uses for each costumes and the detail is immense.

Switching gears here.  I think showing a rehearsal of a production. It’s very important for our students.  It demonstrates that rehearsals should be done with high energy, full commitment and dedication.  Get a Sneak Peak at New Broadway Musical Spongebob Squarepants (2:25 mins.)

Hadestown

Take a Tour Downtown of Hadestown with Rachel Hauk, set design and Rachel Chavkin, director. (4:09 mins.) For your students who can’t get enough of the creative process of designing a production, you’ll want to show this one.

Making the Music Anais Mitchell  (3:50 mins.) talks about composing the music for Hadestown. In particular, she talks about the song, “Why Do We Build a Wall.: The lyrics to this song are not a political statement, but when Hadestown opened our former president was busy trying to keep immigrants out of the country.  Talk about life imitating art and vice versa.

Broadway’s Hadestown is a Google Talk (55:31 mins.) which older students would appreciate.  I think I would use it for a discussion and pick out certain parts which I wanted to point out–blocking, staging, etc.  Members of the cast have an opportunity to share about the production. I especially appreciate Andre Shields’ interview.  Although long, it’s worth the time.

You can find bootleg copies of Hadestown. That means someone recorded it illegally.  I don’t recommend using these because it just perpetuates the idea that this activity is acceptable.

Beetlejuice

Heres a fun one to study:  Beetlejuice!  The Cast of Beetlejuice Performed at  medley at the Tony Awards. (3:48 mins.) Something interesting about this musical is that it was nominated for many Tony awards and didn’t win one.  Strange, huh?

The set design is so imaginative–I’d show this for your gifted students.  They’ll get a kick out of it! David Korns strikes again as the designer of the Beetlejuice set.  It might be interesting to show the three video clips of his work and see if there are any similarities.  That’s what I would do.  Set Tour with Designer David Korin/ Beetlejuice the Musical. (7:22 mins.)

In How William Ivey Long Created the Beetlejuice and Tootsie Costumes (9:35 mins.) Long speaks about his process for the musical.  Talk about talented!  You’ll see that he spent over two years designing Beetlejuice.  Amazing.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Oh yes!  To study a  little bit of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play  would be fabulous for middle grade students.

If your students are unfamiliar with the play, show them this montage first: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Exclusive Montage. (4:43 mins.)

This clip shares many things–the director, special effects, blocking, staging, lighting design, costume design–you name it.  Behind the Scenes of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2:49 mins.) is a definite show on my list!

I think students will find this video Magic to Do: Harry Potter with James Snyder (9:51 mins.) demonstrates that actors are pretty much like the rest of us.  Pretty goofy.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Let’s say you want to read a play in your high school theater class?  I’d suggest To Kill a Mockingbird.  I’d include these video clips while we read it.  Maybe as a warm-up.

I’d begin with this video clip.  It concerns how the play was reworked by the director, Aaron Sorkin. How Aaron Sorkin Reworked To Kill a Mockingbird for Broadway  (7:19 mins.) It’s fascinating.

To Kill a Mockingbird Lessons for Today focuses on (7:10 mins.)  the show’s star Jeff Daniels and playwright Aaron Sorkin about translating Lee’s characters to the stage, and with students who talk about “Mockingbird”‘s relevance to today’s audience.

Lastly, this video clip discusses the characters of the play.  Citizens of To Kill a Mockingbird LaTanya Richards Jackson as Calpurnia (2:40 mins.)

I hope these video links give you a lot of choice and ideas for your classroom use.  If I were you, I’d teach a different musical or play each day–that’s 8 days or more of lessons for you.  And….a substitute could use these as well.

The Seven Reasons I Recommend Plays for New Audiences Scripts

Have you heard of Plays for New Audiences? No? They are terrific.  Here are the seven reasons I recommend plays for new audiences scripts.

Plays for New Audiences is a division of Children’s Theatre Company. (Pictured above) Minneapolis, Minnesota. PNA offers contemporary works that are topical, relevant, and even fantastical. In addition, PNA offers many reimagined classics that are stage-ready for your next production.

The Children’s Theatre Company (formerly known as The Moppet Players from 1961 to 1965) is a regional theater established in 1965, specializing in plays for families, young audiences and the very young.

I ran on to the Childrens Theatre Company many years ago and picked up a few scripts for the youth theater I was administrating. Friends, these scripts are fabulous.

Plays for High School of Middle School Students to Perform

At least once a week, I read of teachers desperate to find a script to produce with their students.  Either they need one for their class to produce, or are looking for a play to use to travel and perform for their elementary or middle schools. (Next school year would be a fantastic time to do this with your students since the pandemic will have subsided and everyone should be back in school full swing.)

Here are a few I suggest, but friends there are many of which to choose.  Do give this website an afternoon to peruse.

Mark Twain

The Seven Reasons I Recommend Plays for New Audiences Scripts

Reason #1: Some are adapted from celebrated authors.

A Mark Twain Storybook is about a troupe of actors who re-tell some of Mark Twain’s most popular stories in “The Quadricetennial edition of America’s most loved traveling show, The Celebrated Mark Twain Storybook and Musicale Review!” They cover Tom Sawyer, The Good Little Boy (and, conversely, The Bad Little Boy), The Jumping Frog, What Stumped the Bluejays, Experience of the McWilliamses with Membranous Croup, and The Prince and the Pauper. A Mark Twain Storybook is a vaudeville inspired, rollicking delight.

The script is forty-five pages with roles for five actors with a running time of seventy-five minutes and recommended for ages six and up.

Reason #2:  They are willing to adapt movies into plays. Generally, a movie will come out of a play version, but I like that they are willing to reverse that if the script is worthwhile.

Another script which looks sensational is Akeelah and the Bee.  Akeelah and the Bee tells the story of a girl with a crazy passion for words: the more abstruse and labyrinthine, the better. But this gift is almost overwhelmed by the challenge of her daily life in a tough, Chicago neighborhood. Akeelah’s aptitude earns her a spot in the National Spelling Bee, which inspires the people in her neighborhood with her courage and tenacity. (You may be familiar with this title as there was a movie of it first.)

The script is 104 pages with roles for seven males and seven females.  It runs two hours and is suitable for ages eight and up.

Reason #3:  Some plays contain original plots.

If you are looking for something concerning the Jewish culture, I’d check out The Adventures of Motel. The Adventures of Motel is a story of adventure and misadventure set in Russia in the year 1905. A Jewish boy named Mottel meets the trials of living under rule of a cruel Czar with wit and good cheer. Mottel has many adventures, from causing the whole town to sneeze, dying the river (and in effect all the laundry) blue, and eventually travelling to America. We are able to experience what life was like for Jews in Russia at this tine while being entertained by the mishaps of a young boy.

The script is fifty-eight pages in length, runs two hours and has a cast of thirteen male and eleven female.  It is suitable for ages eleven and up.

Reason #4: Many are multicultural.  Quite a few are adaptations from folk or fairy tales.

Monkey King

The Monkey King is a fabulous folk tale from China. I’d take a look at it if you have a large class or auditioning pool.

The Monkey King play concerns a Heavenly Palace, the Jade Emperor and the Jade Empress are holding a feast. Suddenly a monkey hatches from a rock and declares himself King, shaking the very foundations of heaven and earth. He even travels to the underworld and erases his death in the Book of the Dead. The Emperor tries to capture the Monkey, but the wild animal escapes, ending up in a showdown with Buddha himself! Buddha wins and thus begins the Monkey’s earthly adventures. He accompanies a monk on a pilgrimage, along with two traveling companions, a pig, Ba-jie, and a carp, Sha-Sen, both of whom have been sent down to earth after causing trouble in the Heavenly Realm. As with every great quest story, the journey tests the character of the four travelers. To complete the mission, each must learn to recognize his weakness and understand their strengths.

The script is fifty-two pages  in length runs one hour and  forty-one minutes with roles for fifteen male and eight female +ensemble (Doubling possible)

Talking

Reason #5:  They are diverse.

Based on the book of the same name, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy is worth checking out as well.

In Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy  Turner Buckminster III can’t win: he’s the new kid in town, he plays baseball differently, and he stumbles upon trouble at every step. Turner’s only friend is Lizzie Bright Griffin from Malaga Island, an impoverished community founded by former slaves. The town (and Turner’s father) disapproves of their friendship, but Turner and Lizzie remain friends regardless. When powerful forces threaten Lizzie and her kin, Turner faces the ultimate test of his character—and learns a hard-earned lesson about courage and loss.

The script is eighty-eight pages in length, runs two hours (with an intermission) and has roles for four male and seven female. It is appropriate for nine years and up.

Reason #6:  They are entertaining and fun!

Looking for a musical?  Here is one–Bunnicula!

Bunnical is about a dancing cat, a howling dog, and a vampire bunny. The perfect pet combination for any family. It’s a dark and stormy night and Chester (the family cat) and Harold (the family dog) sit waiting for their owners to return home from the movies. Chester and Harold are more than just pets, they’re good friends too. When the Monroes finally get home, they come bearing a surprise: they’ve found a bunny in the movie theater. But this is no ordinary rabbit… this is the extraordinary Bunnicula. When the family’s produce starts losing its juice, Chester thinks he knows what’s causing the fantastic phenomenon. Bunnicula is a vampire! Or maybe Chester’s imagination is getting the better of him. Singing and dancing their way through this hilarious mystery, the furry friends find room in their hearts, and in their home, for one very unique bunny.

This musical comes with musical tracks which would be very helpful if you don’t have an accompaniast.  The show runs one hour and thirty-one minutes, has roles for two female and one male and is suitable for age six and up.

Holiday Plays

Publishers with holiday themed scripts are always a plus in my book.  Prancer concerns young Jessica Riggs’ family has fallen on hard times. Still, she keeps her belief in Santa Claus and the idea that there are miracles in the world. When an injured reindeer appears in Jessica’s backyard, she believes it is Prancer. While she is nursing the creature back to health, the whole community of Three Oaks eventually learns about Prancer, causing big problems for Jessica as she tries to return the reindeer home. Based on the cherished film, Prancer, this piece uses a heartwarming story and breathtaking puppetry to bring light into your holiday season.

Licensing and Royalties Information

I did want to touch on purchasing scripts and royalties for these plays and musicals.  If you want to purchase copies for your class to read called you need a Classroom Reading license. This is a fifty dollar per semester cost. You can download and copy as many as you need. If you want to purchase, just one it is $12.00. I think it would be better to purchase a classroom reading license. At fifty dollars,  that’s a pretty good deal since the average script cost of other publishers is usually around $10.00.  I’d seriously consider doing this if I were you.

You would need to apply for a license to produce one of their plays in order to receive a royalty quote.  I was unable to secure this information for you.
